Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

Restoring my 67 C10 (12-bolt rear) and have a new Auburn Gear limited slip carrier and new ring and pinion. All set up by a reputable shop. My truck was originally a 6-lug truck and I purchased the 5-lug conversion axles from CPP. The carrier cross pin was tight to push out with my finger and the new axles and c-clips installed fine. The carrier cross pin was tight going back in. I had to tap it in with a hammer and brass punch and there is no play in the axles. Ideally it would have been good if it would have slid right in by hand. Because it is tight I expect that, if the axels are ever removed, then the cross pin will need to be tapped back out. So here is my question...

Is it ok that the cross pin was and is a little tight to install with the new axles?

Thanks for any guidance on this

From what i have seen,.020/.030, is the end play on the axles that 12 bolt diff.. IMO, you have a couple choices. You could go to a slightly thinner set of C-clips, or grind the ends of the axles to give a little end play? Longhorn

Re: Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

Longhorn thank you so much for this information. I am leaning towards grinding the end of the shafts I think. Not sure if I can find any thinner c-clips although the c-clips world be easier. If I grind I’ll have to figure out how to do so while staying square with the end of the shaft. Wish I had a machine shop close by!

Re: Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

My thoughts, are that that would be a bunch of work with a file! If you have a chop saw....or know a bud who does, You could chain the wheel down & set the vise loose enough to turn the axle by hand. Do support the outer end to keep things square....then just bump the axle into the wheel & turn it by hand(may take 2 guys to play). You can check the width of the button, with dial calipers(check often, & dont let the axle get too damn hot). I would not cool with water, but use compressed air to cool thing down. Check to hit the lower end of the spec(say .015-.020, as metal tends to grow when hot) Hope that helps a tad more. Longhorn

Re: Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

Well it took most of the morning, but I was taking it slow. Used a combination of my bench grinder (the flat side of the grinding wheel) and a file. Installed the axle 4 times and check end play each time til it was just right. Got about .021” of play now instead of the .000” that I started with. I appreciate all the help with this fellas!!! Now on to the next part of the project - front suspension!

Re: Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

It sounds like you got it where I would have liked it on my own truck Good deal! I have to ask though, how hard was it to file on the axles? Longhorn

Re: Rear 5-Lug Axle Swap & Carrier Question

Was not to hard filing down. I would grind a little on the bench grinder, then file a little, then test fit. Did this over and over until I got it to where I wanted it. TOOK! ALL! MORNING!
