Hupcap question. Metallurgy?

I bought a set of 3/4 ton dog dish caps. Couple have hairline cracks around the edge no biggie I thought. I hit them with a magnet non magnetic . So first guess was Stainless that someone painted, got out the mushroom grinder and its gold in color. Second thought they possibly could be SS chrome caps that someone painted. But the copper color goes all the way through the metal. And I seriously doubt that they would have used copper. So it must be an alloy of some kind. Any thoughts?

I need to know what rod to get for the tig welder

Cool . I can use a rod for brass tiging it. Or just use gas and brazing rod

Re: Hupcap question. Metallurgy?

73-75 transitioned to stainless w/gold bow ties and are much less likely to crack at the edges. Can also be polished up nicely. But chrome caps are correct, and very hard to come by in good condition, for 69-72.

Re: Hupcap question. Metallurgy?

That is the standard for 60-72... chromed brass. But there are exceptions on both sides of the change over. Not that it applies to your case. Remember when brazing with gas was the only choice?

Re: Hupcap question. Metallurgy?

Tim we used to gas weld most everything. On some of the old cars we restored we used lead . My uncle never liked bondo.

All '67-'71 'chrome" caps are actually chrome over brass ( notorious for cracking, splitting and denting easily ). '72 " chrome" was a transition year, some were chrome over brass, some got the new improved, and much more durable stainless steel.

Re: Hupcap question. Metallurgy?

Visuals are great. Original chrome over brass. This is why they are rarely seen on '69-72 Chevy or GMC.
