Question question about vacuum pump

Has anyone used this air vacuum pump? Can I use it to not only pull a vacuum but also hold a vacuum to check for leaks in my AC system? Here is the link for it. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=3952

Leaks in the system are best check with pressure and soap bubbles were accessable and a inexpensive propane tank leak detector for areas where bubbles can't get. If the leak is somewhat large there will be signs oil that is moved through the system with the refrigerant. Good luck Ed ke6bnl So Ca.

I thought about that pump too to make a power break bleeder.
For the price I wouldnt be to sure on the quality.
What I did.........
Find an old refridg. that someone is junking. Remove the compressor. Makes a neat little compressor and vacuum pump. It will pull vacuum to 28 inches and make alot of pressure.......and its free!

edit)- Be careful about pressure with this though. A pressure switch is a good idea. and yes it will hold a vacuum.

If you can get an old Fridgadair, they had rotory compressors and will pull as good a vacuum as an exspensive refregeration compressor but with a far less cfm volume. As the ohter fellow said the high pressure side can develop over 400 lbs. I have see some refrigerator copper part explode. so be carfull. When used as a pump it is necessary to keep and eye on the oil it will slowly leave the pump and need replacement. Probably can keep about 4-6 oz. in it at all times. Just turn it over let it out and replace with refrigeration oil. one gallon whould last a lifetime. Good luck Ed
