HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Replaced the carrier bearing on my 69 leaf spring short step today. It has the unusual triangle shaped carrier bearing. You actually take the sandwich plates apart and drop in the new bearing and clamp in back together.
My original one the rubber had shrunk and it just rattled around in there in addition to the bearings being whacked. Hopefully the info here will help other people find the replacement part rather than having to cobble together a different style mount.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Came from Driveshaft Specialist Inc. in San Antonio and they were great to deal with. Cost $45 delivered.
Neapco part # N212050x It says GM heavy duty carrier bearing on the invoice.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
I know I'm bringing this thread back from the dead, but I am now trying to replace the bearing on my '67 GMC. The links above say this part is no longer available...anyone know otherwise?
The pic below is the part I received from Rockauto for my '67. Not even close. Any help is appreciated.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Buying an uncommon part like this from Rock Auto could be tricky. SOme parts books don't even have the correct listings for carrier bearings and U-joints...ask me how I know, I sold auto parts for 13 years...
See if you can find the Neapco part number in this thread, or call around with that Neapco number see if they can cross it over. Most parts stores have pictures of their parts, this could help. My 68 C-10 big block pickup has same type carrier bearing, but mine hangs down, yours sits on the bracket. |

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
That's too bad, and complete BS that a bearing is discontinued.
The HD bearing appears to be MUCH more durable than the other styles. I have a had several 3/4 ton leaf spring trucks and they did NOT have the HD bearing so I am not sure what the paramaters were when they used it. But one of that style you have picture of may can be disassembled and the inner bearing removed and possibley used in the HD housing. If the ID of the bearing is correct.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
I hope the OP doesn't mind, but I am going to continue this thread on how I am replacing my HD carrier bearing. I figure if all of this information stays in one thread, it will help out many others in the future. If I am wrong, will a moderator please let me know and I will start a new thread.
EDIT: The part number for the below bearing is SKF# HB88107A Ok, so per Mike's suggestion above, I decided to pull apart the part I got from rock auto that clearly doesn't match the original bearing carrier. I then took apart my original carrier and here is where I am at:

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
The original rubber insert is in surprisingly great shape. Only the little dust lip has deteriorated, but it is reusable I think.
Now that carrier half and rubber support sleeve are out of the way, looking at the dust shield and original bearing compared with the new bearing that I took out of the assembled carrier I received, I think they are damn near the same! I have to run and get a 3" clam shell puller so I can get the original bearing off and check them out side by side. Standby!

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
The only hang up I see so far is that maybe the little tangs on the outer bearing shell may interfere when I am bolting the two halves together...we'll see.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Well, I had to order the bearing splitter to remove the bearing so it'll be a few days. In the meantime I think I found the rubber cushion that goes around the bearing:

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Awesome. I was reasonably sure that's what you were going to find. I want to say that the replacement bearing I had came with the "tabs" on the outer shell. I'll look and see if I too some other pics.
EDIT: If you go back up and look at my pics from the original post, the bearing appears IDENTICAL to the one you cut out of the replacement carrier bearing set. EDIT 2: Do you have the part # from the Rock Auto piece to include in this thread for future reference? Glad you are adding to the knowledge base in my post.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
It is interesting even though we have the same carrier bearing, they are installed differently. Mine hangs and yours points up.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
Update!
I received my new puller and got the old bearing off. That was a bit of work! I'm fairly certain that bearing has been on there since 1967. So I cleaned everything up and pressed on the new bearing and then mocked up the two carrier halves with the original rubber cushion. It was really loose. Although the cushion was in good shape I think it just shrunk. The second pic shows the original cushion. The last two pics shows the old bearing and new bearing next to each other. The bearings are identical and are SKF part number BR88107. The only difference is what SKF calls the "Slingers". That would be the metal rings that are pressed onto the bearing outer race. The original slingers are perfectly round and the newer slingers have a protrusion that grabs a slot molded into the rubber cushion that it sits in. I damaged one of the slingers when I pressed off the bearing as you can see in the last picture. I don't know how you could press that off and not destroy it unless you made a custom tool.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
This site may help you find a bearing with rubber that could be modified to work in the factory clam shells.

Re: HD carrier bearing. The odd one.
SO, I did find what I believe is the original cushion made by SKF, but seems to only be available in Europe and UK. Here is the link:
https://www.skf.com/us/products/roll...-RIS%20208%20A I reached out to a UK distributor, but I have not heard back. I think due to the Coronavirus. I'm not a huge fan of waiting; in other words impatient. So I decided to cut up the rubber cushion that came with the RockAuto carrier. After carefully modifying it with a razor blade it works beautiful! I bolted up the two halves and the carrier bearing is nice and snug and operates smoothly. I'm going to install tomorrow and give 'er a test drive.
