The original goal was to get it safe, legal and drivable then drive it in 2019 while I planned for an eventual frame off, LS swap, etc., project. Well, it seems that over the Christmas break, the old engine decided it had other plans and decided that it was done. It wasn't the original engine (283) and was older than the truck (1966-1967 vintage), but it ran, kinda.

So, now it is looking like the plan for a frame off, LS swap, etc. project might just start right about now.

My number 1 concern right now is recover from a serious medical condition. Until a week ago, I haven't worked on my truck since July 2018. It's been off the road for 3 - 4 years.. I bought it December 2017, so one of those years is on me.. I finished the power brake conversion the weekend before Christmas.. It needs more work but at least it's drivable.. Items on the to-do list are:

Re-seal the transmission
New body and core support mounting kit
New upholstery and carpet
Replace window channels
Replace hood hinges
Fabricate riser/console for B&M shifter
Insurance, state safety inspection
Registration and license plates

I am planning to get my drivetrain and suspension taken care of so that I can get it back on the road, safe & reliable.
It's been sitting for 19 years so I am going to start with pulling the motor and replacing all of the gaskets and seals. I've already replaced the fuel and ignition systems and got it running good and I know the internals of the motor are good.
While I have the motor apart I plan to either send the transmission off to have it rebuilt, or I might try it myself. Been around 20 years since I've had a transmission apart....
The rearend is good mechanically. I'll just change the gasket and seals in it also.
Next will be wiring. I've never wired a whole vehicle before, but with the kits that are out there now it shouldn't be too bad.
After that I will finish up the suspension. I've already replaced everything except for ball joints and control arm bushings and front & rear springs. Those will get taken care of with 3" drop arms and stock height springs in the front and 5" drop springs in the back.
Then it will just be throwing some fresh tires on to the stock 15×6 wheels that I dug out of the barn after 25 years and drive the crap out of it until I save up more money.

1) Complete my light-up door-sill step plate install
2) Complete the re-wiring of the right front indicator
3) Install mini air coolers using brackets
4) Fix the park lights by using diodes
5) Take it to the body shop (fix paint scratches & chips, get the original tailgate painted and installed)
6) Get the starter bendix gear fixed
7) Install a middle passenger seatbelt
8) Re-mount my lighter socket splitter.
The rest probably won't get done, but I'll list them anyway:
9) Move the towing hook and get a different size number plate for the rear
10) Install the immobilizer
11) Install the alarm
12) Install the sensitivity trigger for the alarm
13) Remove the seat and cut a new carpet
14) Get a new temperature control switch for the fan and install it
15) Get new bushings and springs to straighten out the stance
16) Install windows and new struts in my canopy
17) Clean the engine bay

I've had a list going, pictured, for 2/3 years with initially 40+ things I wanted to get done. I believe I have about 15 left some inexpensive and some are expensive. For 2019 my priorities are:

1... Get the 700R4 installed first thing in Spring..
Cant do it myself so have been stashing money away to get it done.
2... Pull heater core and get rebuilt..

3... With the heater core done I can install the new carpet and get my buckets bolted down properly and as well install the shoulder/lapbelts..

4... I have new window channel felts and door moldings and if I get them in fine if not 2020 will be good.

5... Take the truck to at least 4/5 day drive car shows through the season.

Get the paint job finished. (Been in the shop for 4 months now)
New or rebuild TH350. (Went out on the way to the paint shop)
Wire up my neutral safety switch.
Hook up heater core.
Larger Brake booster.
Fuel Injection? (Holley or FiTech)
Drive the wheels off.

Paint and assembly on the 2- 67 short beds I'm building now . When a new 3M full face respirator shows up in the mail you know it's time to get busy ! :lol:

Some great projects here...I'll be keen to follow the 700R4 upgrade...that is something for further down the road for me as well.
As for my truck...hmmm, lets see...for this year:
-FINALLY put the 12volt 'start' issue to rest with respect to getting the full voltage to the coil for initial (morning) starts.
(I had this fixed for a couple of months...then it returned, but I might start a thread about this journey)
-Re-detail under the hood....new engine paint, touch-ups, decals, etc, etc.
-Full transmission service and fluid change as well as the rear differential.
-Check/upgrade the front steering components to get rid of the slack in the system which is causing some front tire wear.
-Either tighten up the exhaust or lose the headers and go back to the original Ram Horn manifolds and the full/correct heat pipe arrangement.

Hopefulls:
-Source/Buy/Install an upgraded vintage (new tech) radio and while I'm doing the dash tear down....put in my new centre/upper A/C chrome vent, new glovebox liner and possibly a new dash pad.....best to do all of these at once.
-Source/Buy new Highlander seat and get it installed.

....okay, now I can use this list as a reminder for myself.
The truck (like many Canadian vintage vehicles) is off the road for the winter and so I have a few months to consider and collect what I need to do.

It looks like another productive and interesting year on the board!
Last year I bought a new aluminum intake, FiTech injection, and some LEDs for the dash lights.
This year, I hope to install them!
Oh yea, the transmission is starting to slip, so may have to add that...

The plan is to replace the windshield, replace the rocker panels, and install the new bed wood.
I have a reliable shop for the windshield and rockers, and have the wood, already cut, milled and waiting in the garage, so it’s just taking the time.

I'm sending my 72 to Texas with my daughter. To do that, I'll need to fix a heater core leak, a driveline vibration, an odd fuel vent line issue, and new tires.

All before April. I'm mostly worried about the driveline vibration, because it comes and goes, so I must have two similar vibrations going in and out of phase with each other, so it has to be either in the transmission or the differential, and the transmission sounds more likely. I don't want to replace the tranny.

Well ... I could send one out for the quality paint work I want or I can spend the $ on materials and do them my self . It will probably be faster than waiting on someone else working on their own schedule and being stuck in paint prison . It wouldn't work for me I'd be the worst customer stopping in the paint shop everyday .:sumo: :lol:


There are a lot of guys up here with home based body shops and most are pretty darn good and I've seen many very nice jobs done here local .Everyone knows who's building what way before it ever hits the road so the paint work is gonna be pretty slick .for Bragging rights

I plan on cleaning up the motor. It is a 66 vintage 220HP 327 that runs well, but needs a good cleaning, some oil leaks fixed, and some overall TLC. I would like to remove the factory ramhorn exhaust manifolds to clean them up, but am nervous as hell about snapping bolts off.

I also need to keep tabs on mission creep, and not get carried away with taking things apart. Last year a rear spring replacement project turned into an axle rebuild, brake system rebuild, and a new exhaust system. All good, but once the nice weather returns to NH I want to be on the road again.

I hope to finish my engine swap. Should have been a weekend job but the weather turned nasty before it was done and now I have family things to deal with. I know, it will happen but some times it just seems to take forever!

Install the new water pump, hopefully without breaking any bolts. Couldn't get the one in the manifold to budge before I parked it.

Replace the valve cover gaskets.

I would love to install new seat upholstery, carpet and find some used door sill plates. Basically clean the interior up. No plans on exterior paint work, want to keep the look.
