Late model seats
 

With my 68 nearly back on the road, it's time to start looking for ways to ditch the pain-in-the-rear, cheesy seat cover. The local upholstery guy wants "between $200 and $250" to recover the original bench in vinyl. I'm considering putting in a late model seat instead.

I know many others have gone down this road before me. What seats work best? What's involved? Any pics?

A mid 90's Silverado seat is in my cab, you'll love it. I paid $300 for it. You have to drill 4 holes in the floor and bolt it down. Do a search, I know we've talked about this before and it seems like someone had a couple good pics, wish I did.

I went with a 3 piece aftermarket seat and am happy with them.

Mine aren't mounted yet but here is a 40/20/40 seat out of a 1999 Silverado sitting in my 69's cab.

Yukon Jack are they comfortable in their? that is what i have been planing on for a long time but after seeing yours it looks kinda cramped :-( and i hate to not have leg room

I have put the pedals back in and yes it is tighter but I think it will be fine. The driver seat sits about 24" from the firewall, which seems a little close but it is pretty comfortable. Height is right at 15" which also feels good. I am worried about the 4 wheel drive shifter hitting the middle seat, but it can be modified. In 4 Low it used to basically lay on top of the old bench seat.

Another board member measured his stock seat as 28" from the firewall and about 14" tall - so the new seats are sit about 4" closer to the dash and are about an inch or so taller. That is with the seats reclined at a comfortable position but nearly touching the rear of the cab.

I imagine the 4 speed shifter will be fine.

Small changes for a big improvement in seats.

skokie - do you want a bigger pic since that one is kinda small or a closer pic of a certain part?

yukon--do you have the gas tank still in the cab? if the tank was out, would it be possible to set it back a little farther?

Gas tank sits pretty much into a recess in the cab. You will not gain much (if any) when you remove it.

Tank is out of cab. I will try to get a picture tonight showing a side view as the only picture I have doesn't show leg room at all.

Don't want to step on anybodys thread here.

I put some seats out of a 02 Tahoe, the same seat as Yukon has, in mine, and it made the seat to close and too tall for me; I am 6'4" and 295lbs though. They are some comfortable seats, but that 4"s closer is more than you think.

Maybe a couple of pillows underneath and behind you would give you an idea of what it is like.

ive seen alot of guys put in the newer silverado seats from almost any year of truck.. in my day which was when those trucks were pretty new alot of guys also put old cadillac leather seats in there too

I have a 99 Silverado bench in my 69. The front holes line up perfect but you have to drill holes for the rear and space it up level with the front. It sat to high on the ledge that the front of the seat sits on so I cut a notch and rewelded it so the back sits on the floor instead of using spacers. It seems to be ok but I'm installing new carpet and insulation and haven't driven it with the new seat yet.

I used a mid 90's 60/40 split bench from a suburban. It's gray vinyl and fit great. I don't think it changed my seating position more than an inch, if at all.

Here is the first set I had in mine...out of a 90 C1500

here is what I have now, splint bench out of a 93 C1500 extended cab. Both are the same for comfort, but if I ever did it again I would stick with the one piece bench. Since I can't really use the split option very well, the straight bench is a lot cleaner and simpler install

That split sits a little high too. We did one in a 69 gmc and even with a 15 inch steering wheel, we had minimal clearanc between our thighs and the wheel...and that's when my thighs were small too.
