"02 Z71 rearend noise

My rearend developed a whining noise thats constant. Doesn't change when cornering. Put it on stands in gear, if I stop right side tire it quits. Doesn't sound like axle bearing. Opened cover on rearend, different looking carrier than normal GM. Any ideas on what type carrier it is and possible noise?

Pull the axles & check it out, The "G80" Gov-Loc locker is normal on later GM trucks.

Are you thinking axle bearing? best bet replace all bearings pinion , carrier & axle or do these carriers problematic?

If its just a axle bearing, Replace that bearing....Got to remove the axle to know for sure. The bearing going bad also damages the axle, Repair bearings are junk...Have the axle welded & machined or buy a new axle.

Thanks, It is the G80. I'm going to tear it down today.

With 225 K on the Ole Gal I guess it was time for an overhaul. The inner pinion bearing was probably the main culprit. There was also pitting on the carrier bearings also. I went ahead and replaced all bearings and seals. I cracked one of the shims for the carrier, are they difficult to find ?

They can be impossible to find in the factory 1-piece version, An aftermarket shim kit will work.
