Saddle tanks

I was wondering if anyone has a picture of their truck with saddle tanks and where the filler neck is.

Hook'em 11-21-2004 11:56 PM

My truck has saddles on both sides. The filler necks comes out into the rear wheel wells. I will try to post a pic tomorrow, if no one else posts a pic.

i have two saddle tanks the dealer torched the holes into the bedsides and it used to have aluminum doors like were on motorhomes

72 CustomCamper 11-22-2004 12:05 AM

My 72 use to have a factory installed drivers side saddle tank. The filler neck came through the bed side like a blazer neck a few inches behind the cab neck. I don't have any pics though because my uncle removed the tank due to rust before he gave me the truck...

You can see the doors on my 70, not sure if the dealer or the factory did them:

My twin saddle tanks (Travel Tanks brand) have aluminum doors in the same location as the above pics. Very short straight filler necks come straight up from the tanks.

I have the Blazer bedside style. On inside of bed there is a panel that covers up the filler neck assembly. If I had one of those aluminum door access panels I would trash it and put in some kind of modern filler door.

Is there any way to route the filler neck to the inside of the bed?

purple gas 11-22-2004 02:38 PM

ok, maybe I'm a radical. Or maybe it's cause I'm Canadian & the snow & cold made me this way. But it just Blows my mind that people go to the trouble of moving their tanks then put the filler inside the bed. no matter how many gazzilion dollars goes into these trucks, when I see a filler in the bottom of the bed I think,,, well,,, there not nice thoughts. But then I intend on using my truck to perhaps haul stuff. Just my opinion, to each his own.

chickenwing 11-22-2004 02:47 PM

Well, Purple. The tank itself is pretty much a bolt in. A filler neck in the bed is 1 big hole cut and a little bit of fitting for the collars around the neck. Pretty easy stuff for a novice. Bedside filler doors take a bit of talent with a welder or cash for a person to run said welder.

Anyways...

Do you have any info on modern doors for us poor slobs with the old type? ;)

when I had a some body work and a paint job done in 1989; I had the tanks removed and the filler neck moved so that it was inside the rear well The side fill doors were removed ( they were in poor shape anyhow!) and the hole filled before final bodywork and painting..... I like the cleaner look .. Also, looks like Hook 'Em has done the same thing.......... Jim

Nope. I see lots of info posted on a side marker fill using an s-10 door. I imagine you could take that info and apply it to whatever filler door strikes your fancy. I didn't mean to infer that I have any type of welding skills. I'm good at research, problem solving and welding prep but I have to PAY for the actual welding.

Now just going to a blazer type set-up I have I could do that by myself once I found all the parts. Just a bedside hole to cut out.

2low72 11-23-2004 04:04 PM

Is there any way to turn the tank around so the filler neck can go inside the bed. I've never seen what a saddle tank actually looks like..(shape, size, ect). just pondering my possibility's

That helps, So I could just cut a hole in the bed where the filler neck is and it should work???

No. They are designed so the filler neck is between the inside and outside walls of your bed.

I currently have the aluminum door pop-riveted over a hole hacked in my bedside like many others with this extra tank. When I finally get around to installing my blazer tank I'm going to get two filler doors from the same year/make doner and weld them into the bed side.

If you use the blazer tank filler from the factory you have to run it inside the bed and through the floor. I intend to use a scavenged spare tire carrier to cover the filler tube inside the bed. It would be really nice if the filler tube cover could actually be used as a spare tire carrier as that is how I carry my spare now.

2low72 11-24-2004 10:05 AM

ok i see what you mean. How many gallons do they hold?

Looks like with some cutting you could run the filler neck about anywhere you want it.It's just a piece of hose right?I would have it come out near the top of the bed on the inside if possible. The aluminum door looks like crap, and the blazer necks leave a little to be desired IMO.

Or you could use a spring fuel door like this s10 jobber here, provided you can weld;)

I do not think that is true. I have that EXACT tank in my truck. The filler neck of the tank actually extends into the bed from the floor. There is a hose from the tank to a filler neck tube/collar that screws into the bedside. There is a shroud that then screws into the inner bedside to protect the assembly from cargo. Still workin on a pic.

72 CustomCamper 11-24-2004 05:22 PM

Mine was the way chickenwing described. I don't know how the dealer installed came through, but the factory one mine had came up through the bed...
