valve on the heater core hose
I have a problem with hot air constantly coming out of the vents in my truck . I heard mention of a valve that can be placed on the heater core hose that shuts off the flow of water to the heater core when not in use. Is this a stock item that someone has removed from my truck or is it an aftermerket idea? Does anyone know how they work , are they manually operated or vacuum operated?

Think of it like installing a water spicket in your hose, it works the same way.

I have installed a shut off valve on my truck for the same reason, hot air in the cab.
I have a non/ac cab, so I installed the valve on the lower heater hose, the one from the intake manifold. This is the one that flows into the heater core. The upper one is the return hose to the water pump. Just splice into the heater hose, and install a ball type shut off valve. The one I used was in the plumbing section at home depot. It is even gold and chrome colored, and looks good. It is actually brass inside. Approx $12. Works great. go to a hardware store and get yourself a 1/2" ball valve, 2 barbed fittings to fit your hose size that screw into the valve, and 2 hose clamps. cut your heater hose, shouldn't matter which one, plumb it in, start and warm up motor with valve open and check for leaks, shut it off when you dont want heat. simple, and easily done for under $10.

Oh yeah and the engine is doing good after i fixed the lower radiator hose that was only half on and leaking.....but I think the tranny might need a rebuilding here pretty soon...hehe.wait'll i tell the accountant :D .........she's gonna love that news

Last friday evening we went down to Hwy 99 and about 170 th street in Lynnwood to the informal car show that they have weekly. There were a couple of NICE 67-72 chev's and a lot of other cars. we might go again this week.

The valve from NAPA is brass, but it has a weird screw thing to shut off/open it up. It is possible for it to leak. You have to screw it all the way in, or all the way out to help (I said HELP) prevent it from leaking. Ball Valves are positive closers...the ball seats against the seat and blocks the flow. Even tho I have the NAPA valve and it isn't leaking at this time, AND it was a lot cheaper than the vacuum-operated valve that went bad, I'm gonna consider a ball valve when this one goes bad.

I put the little valve from Napa and it worked like a charm although a little over priced @ $20 I know its gonna make a world of difference.

Most Japanese cars have a nice cable operated valve for the jeater that is mounted on the firewall. They are real nice for your purpose.
