How close is to close for plug wires.

I'm installling header on a sbc 327 inside of my 1960 Apache.
It have the torsion bars, with the three on the tree.
I have engine hugger header, and the some plug wires are close to touching the header. Is this a problem?

Any pics? Depends on the quality of the wires. Some can be a human hair off from touching and still be okay. Are we talking a boot or a wire?

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

Are you trying to use the stock style straight boots for manifolds? You'll need to use 90 degree boots for headers.

And ditto what my brother-from-another-mother said above.

common sense would be if your worried then there to close. there are several heat shielding products and wire wrap that might ease your mind

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

I run MSD wires and my straight plug heads & the hooker headers have a couple areas where the wires touch the header.. I have run these wires for several years from the stock engine to the 383 and now the 408.. and never have they had any issues at all. quality wires will take a beating. I am thinking however to prevent any issues in the future that running the wires under the headers along the under side of the head may work for the ones that are touching.. Then another part of me says hell they have lasted this long with no trouble leave it alone and drive the truck ..

Block huggers... I'd invest in different headers. Stock ramhorn manifolds would be better than block huggers. Block huggers were designed for street rodders stuffing SBC's in old Ford roadster frames.

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

Another option would be to use shorter plugs with the 90 boots, Accel makes the shorter plugs (also known as header plugs):

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

Or dimple your headers, since block huggers don't flow any better than a stock manifold.

RJ -what? dont tell us that you are running Champion plugs in that sb chev!We all know that those plugs run in Dodges & lawn mowers All jokes aside, I would opt for a short Accel plug, & dimple the headers as mentioned above...crazyL

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

Thanks guys,
I'm going with the accel plugs and dimping the header.
Don't know why I went with the champion plugs.

Re: How close is to close for plug wires.

id use a hand held gun cup sand blaster and give those key spots a good hit, use some stove or header paint with ceramic in it that hold in heat, then grab some header turbo shield or even cheap wrap for that area.

hate dimples

would get it low enough not to melt anything
