Coil Springs: Cut or Not?
When I bought my truck it was halfway through a restoration. Unfortunately I could not talk to the previous owner to ask any quetsions about what he had already done. Anyways when I first jacked up the car to start on converting the front drums to discs I noticed that when the truck was up in the air the front spring were loose in the perches. I thought that even when the truck was in the air there would still be some tension on the springs. Do you guys think that the previous owner cut the front coil springs? Here are a couple of pictures of the springs out of the truck. I want to put stock height springs in the truck because I bought dropped spindles and I don't want it any lower right now. Maybe someone could measue stock height springs for me so I can compare them with the measurements I took of my springs.
Thanks for your help. (Click on picture to see larger version)

I would say you have a set of aftermarket dropped coils there, usually you can tell on the end when a coil has been cut, either that or they did a heck of a job of smoothing up the end they cut. Either way they are shorter than stock, because when a truck is jacked up all the way with the tire off the ground, the coil should not move.
This is a pic of a set I cut one coil off of. Last edited by Gene; 12-29-2004 at 06:31 PM. |

I agree, they seem way too smooth on the edges. Those are store bought dropped coils in my opinion.

Did your trucklook lowered? The springs, stock ones, should always be taught. You should have needed a spring compressor to remove them from the truck. I agree that the spring looks too smooth to be cut. Probably aftermarket drop coils.

You don't need a spring compressor to remove stock springs. Just release the ball joint and swing the control arm down and pull the spring out with your hand.

Here is a shot of the truck when I first bought it. It had like 31" tall tires when I bought it so take that into consideration. So if they are store-bought lowered springs do you guys have any idea about how low they are. Does someone have a stock set around they could measure for me? Thanks
