It takes a lot of torque to move these trucks. If you don't want to run premium fuel why not go for a smaller big block 454 or 402 etc. I run my 402 on regular gas and get about 12 mpg. Small block can produce lots of HP but low end torque is what you really need. Needless to say my vote is Big Block all the way!!

What are you worried about gas mileage? It's a 30+ year old full-size truck, running a mean, nasty (in a good way), gas-guzzling 350 or 502 cubic inch engine.
It's gonna LOVE gas!!! Either way! FIVE-OH-TWO baby!!!

I'm all for the Big Block. But you might have to upgrade your tranny and drivetrain to handle all that pedal mashing with your right foot!

Get a jegs catalog and look at all the world products big blocks, go alcohol! Of course it'll set you back 11,000.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm
