Blazer gas tank install tech article

http://www.brotherstrucks.com/tech/t...NSTALLATION%20

This is the Blazer/Suburban gas tank install Tech Article from Brothers. It does mention some trucks need to trim the bed sill but it does not sasy which models require the trimming. Does anyone know whick models require the bed sill (brace) to be trimmed?

What did you use to cut the bed support? Looks like a torch (which I don't have, or a plasma cutter). Do you think it could be done with an air cutoff wheel? I would guess I am SOL unless I invest in the proper tool or find someone to help out!

I used a 4" cut off wheel to do the entire body drop on my 71. It is alot cleaner then a torch or plasma (both of which I have). What I like are cut off wheel blades that are not thicker than .040 they seam to last longer than thicker ones and do not drag down the tool as bad.

do you have a pneumatic cutoff wheel? Man that would take forever here waiting for the air to catch up (i have a 13 gallon compressor) but hey, I bet it was worth it.

I did mine with a cutoff wheel in a right angle die grinder. It took a little longer than a plasma cutter, and isn't as clean initially but I have a lot of sheet metal tools and grinding bits so I cleaned mine up after I was done. It looks good enough for me...

I couldn't bring myself to cut up a mint cross sill so I built 2 stubby sills that mount from the frame outwards.

OK, well I have the 4" pnuematic cutoff tool, so will use it. I noticed each picture is with the bed removed from the truck....I counted 8 bolts holding my SWB bed down (unless I missed something). It would be cool to remove the bed to get my gas tank in and would make the cutting a heck of a lot eaiser for the sill modification. My question is, what is the easiest way to lift off the bed? It is just my wife and I so hefting it without help is not an option. Anyone have advice or lessons learned they would like share on getting my bed removed? Thanks for you help!!

Without a doubt this installation is MUCH easier with the bed removed. I am not even sure I would even think of attempting it with the bed in place. I had only my wife avail. when I took it off, but used an engine hoist/ cherry picker for the re-install.
Most tool rental places rent these and they aren't that expensive. I would not try this without some sort of hoist.

ok, here is what i did with mine by myself. Maybe not the smartest way but it worked. I used four ratchet straps(2 per end) and hung them from my rafters in the garage. Hooked them up to each corner and started racheting away. first one corner and then the other to make it even. then on to the other side. until it was high enough for me to roll the truck out from under it. Just to clarify i had 2 straps per end in case one failed. ratchet one up then the other. then move to the other end.
here are some pics....

I did mine with jig saw... just took off the gaurd and used a metal blade. Held it flush with the bottom of the bed and used the tool itself as a guide. I did use a cutoff wheel to get a hole started and to cut the vertical cuts. Couldnt have turned out any better IMO.

Hey redhead69 did you remove your bed to do the jigsaw cut or did you just tough it out from below with the bed installed?

Crews, how did you fasten the cherry picker to your bed to get an even lift? It looks like you have it fastened in the middle of your bed somehow but did you fasten on the corners too?? Can't tell from the pics....

at first i had a 77 bed side that i was going to put in the corner of my bed, but i had clearance issues with the side marker light. i was going to just shave the side marker, but shaving X4 is much harder than making a simple box with a hole.
so i scrapped the 77 bedside idea after it was almost complete and just made the box

still not done, ran out of bondo. i plan to cover the bed and box in bedliner

Iceman7642- I like that.. looks good!
I did mine just like that but used and s10 filler neck with a reducer on the end, but looks almost identical.. just a bit bigger. Just when I thought I had a one of a kind..haha. I know first hand the head scratching that went on to figure that one out!

Very nice. Where is your vent? What is the name of the larger copper piece near the top? What size tubing did you use? I still am not 100% sure of where I plan on installing the filler. Your is very nice.
