help with 67 power steering - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a 67 SWB with auto (powerglide), cold factory A/C and power brakes. It has a mid 80's model 305 with all of the factory 283 brackets and tins. I am looking to buy a power steering set up from another member but was wondering about possible problems with a 67 model. Some issues I have heard of are -- dimple in frame for the box and different steering column rod. I already have the second pulley (third groove) for the crank. Is there anything else I am missing? Surley someone has added power steering to a non power truck.

Any insight would be helpful.

It sounds like you have it covered. P/S swap is pretty straight forward. You need box, lines, pump and brackets, and a belt.

REZ engineering makes a good kit that adresses the steering column rod and the frame dimple too. Cost is somewhere around 75 bucks. They have ads in the back of pretty much any truck magazine, but no website. It's still a reputable company though, just old school as far as web sales go.

Thanks for the info. I called REZ Engineering and talked to Don. He answered all of my questions and knew exactly what I was talking about. After he told me what to look for I found the frame has the correct dimple and the steering shaft is the short one that will work with the longer power box.

Been thru this on my 67 --- spaced the steering gear--- used a 76 car steering gear--I have the Cardone # at home--- it had the same spline as the stock manual steering gear. Have many pics if needed. I have a short water pump on mine.

Pics would be great. Did yours have the fourth hole already in the frame but not used with the manual box? Did your manual box have a 3 or 4 inch extension on the arm that connects to the rag joint?

It is my understanding that some 67s had the forth hole and the dimple and some did not.

My stock manual was 3 hole---I drilled the fourth in the frame and spaced the power steering gear 1/2" from the frame. I had no dimple. Any parts missing from the pic were reused on the new gear. Will get you more info and pics tomorrow.

The shaft of the manual is 3 3/4" from the seal to the end.

Thanks fot the pic. I think I actually got lucky in that mine already has the forth hole and the dimple.

The power steering gear I used was a Cardone 27-7501. Same spline and shaft size as the manual. Pitman arm I used was a Moog K6131.
