Question wiring questions

I'm put some new gauges in my truck and hve a few question about the wiring. Frist how do you wire up an ampmeter? Second what color is the wire that runs the instrument pannel lights(so I can light the new gages and have the dim with the factory lights). Any help would be great.

The panel light wire is dark green off the switch, which goes to the fuse panel, through the panel lamp fuse, and from there turns into a gray wire to the instrument panel.

alberocks,
the wire off alternator, brown one usually, IE the smallest gauge one goes ot ammeter, and other post on meter gets fed from switched hot source

how it all basically works is if power flows from fuse panel/ign switch or from alternaotr through the meter then it moves the needle, one way discharge other way charge, thats very basic explanation, direction of flow makes needle move one way or the other depending on if its positive or negative
someone else can explain mor ein depth or more accurately if I did horribly in explaining,
