I was wondering how hard could it really be to go to home depot and make your own boards? I mean i have seen just the boards ranging from $250-$400. I mean besides the sake of supporting a member, if i could do it myself, i would. If anyone has tried or has any suggestions i am open ears. thanks.

I seen pine boards from Lowes for 50 a peice. Then you need metal and to cut the boards to fit the truck and metal. I don't know how you would come out cheaper?
It's one of those that are just worth the money. Even if it costs an arm and leg.

Are you talking about changing from steel floor to wood floor? (wood bed conversion) If so, there are a lot of metal parts needed besides the wood boards. As to making your own boards, many people choose to cut their own boards for a variety of reasons. It can be done if you have the tools and skill. We prefer the dimensions in our instruction, http://www.mar-k.com/bedwood_dimensions.pdf , in which you make the measurements on your own truck and cut the wood to fit. If you follow the instructions, your wood will fit correctly. Be sure to use a good exterior finish. Take the time to do it right and you will not be disappointed.

I did my own using GMC Paul's specs. It takes some time, but I like doing things myself also. I did have a problem with measurement "D" though. I would suggest changing "D" from 1/2" to 3/8" if you use his specs. Maybe, like Mar-ktech said, it was my truck, but I think that other people here have had trouble with that one also. Great info though.

I brought my wood and used a table saw to cut down to right length and width, and also used the table saw to cut the strip grooves. Was not that hard to do...

I think the only tough part would be getting the bolt holes aligned right. John fabris has a solution for this and you will have a nice & less costly bed floor.

I priced out oak boards for my short step at $220 just for the wood at home depot. Poplar was about $160 but would not last long. Since precut boards are just a bit more I decided that when I do it I will buy the pre cut.

I bought the precut stuff. Making my own was not worth the risk of messing up my project, and finding out about it during assembly.
