Timing Tape

I want to be able to see how many degrees of timing my truck has when the vaccum advance is running. I don't have a dial-back timing light, and the stock timing tab only goes to 14 or so. I have heard of using timing tape on the harmonic balancer to find this out. How does the timing tape work, and where can i get it?

Timing tape is a piece of tape that has graduation marks on it for the full 360 degrees of your balancer. You have to make sure that you get the appropriate one for your balancer. Clean the balancer, match up the TDC on the tape with your 0 degree mark, and wrap it around the balancer.

Jegs lists 4 different timing tapes 6 inch, 6.75 inch, 7 inch, and 8 inch. $6 for each of them.

i find it best to use the tape to mark the balancer..I use white out.. my experience is that the tape will not stay on..unless you clean it real well and use some killer adhesive
