Custom Camper Question?

Did all custom campers come with a camper or were they options?

Not included. The Custom Camper was actually just a nameplate. A certain group of options had to be present (longhornmail will post this list later, I'll bet ) and you could then be eligible to have the Custom Camper badges on your fenders.

I've never heard of any GM factory slide-in campers. I think my pickup was bought new with a camper in the back of it, because it was sold at a RV center. I have no reason to believe it was a factory option camper, however.

I have to think that since Chevrolet advertised the campers in their brochure, they were offered as official "options" if you will. It had to be a deal where some camper outfit made a deal with Chevrolet to provide campers on licence. My brochure from Chevrolet, circa 1970, details the inside options of your camper, and had several different types and levels to choose from. My truck came with a camper that was selected from the chevrolet brochure, I have the original brochure the original buyer had, and in it, for the special order, he circled the options and camper he wanted from Marx Chevrolet, a northern California dealership.
The Brochure is available if you scour swap meets and or ebay.
But, it is certainly true you could get a Custom Camper without a camper.

They did advertise...may have been local shops that were authorized vendors...dealerinstalled options.
Custom camper was nothing more than H.D. rear springs (leaf or coil) H.D. shocks, and a front anti-sway bar. That is all that was required for the Custom Camper name plate.
