Question found a 71 FS, but...

Found a guy selling a '71. he was asking 2500 for it. went to look at the truck. Every, again EVERY body panel on this truck was rusted dented or missing. The interior, non existant. The motor was in great shap, a 327, .30 over, cam(not sure what), Demon 625, headers. sounded great. He said it only had a couple hundred miles on the motor, it looked it. the frame and front cross member seemed to be in good shape. No ps, or pb.

Any ideas as to what this may be worth?

Oh yea, it had a muncy(sp) 4-speed.

Personally I'd consider it. A muncie is a good tranny in my opinion. If the motor and driveline are worth that much to you, then dive in, hell, you can always fix the metal.

Screw that, when I look for a vehicle I look for the best body I can find. I don't care if I have to tow it home. Wait and you will find one, or shop further west or south. My 2 cents

I'm with Tom on this one. The engine is the least expensive part unless your looking for something beefed up.You can really add the dollars to try and fix a rust bucket. I always buy body 1st.

Thumbs up

I AGREE .. YOU NEED A GOOD BODY (UNLESS YOUR LOOKING FOR A 4 WHEELER TO BEAT THE H@LL OUT OF). THE FIRST THING I'VE DONE WITH EVERY POJECT SO FAR.. IS YANK THE MOTOR, SELL IT AS A RUNNER, & BUILD A MOTOR MYSELF. THAT WAY IT'S NEW, DEPENDABLE, & I KNOW IT'S RIGHT.

A few years back a buddy of mine bought a straight but rusted 68 Camaro, we pulled the drivtrain and some parts off of his dented up, rust free 68 Camaro. Painted the straight but rusty Camaro, it looked good for a year or 2, till all the rust came back. Yes, you guessed it, we ended up swaping the drivetrain back into the beat up Camaro. The rust free car was still rust free, it is better to fix a dent than a rust hole, it is better to rebuild a motor than fix up a running rust bucket.

$2500 sounds a little high for what you described. Have you tried looking around Asheville?

There is a periodical there called "Iwanna" that usually has 6-8
Chevy trucks for sale in it.

Thanks guys for comfirming my feelings on this one. My wife had gone with me to look at it and she asked "why didn't you make him an offer". I told her if he was that proud of that piece of crap, then its not worth the effort.
My current truck I paid a little more for is a perfectly straight, little rust all origianal truck w/ 12 options and a rebuilt origianal motor.
Not really looking for another truck, but heard about this one and his brother told me it had a perfect bed and good front. What a load that was.

Thanks again

Have to agree with everybody else here. Body first, much more work in repairing a body. The engine is easy. Very few people know body work but you can buy a ready to go motor out of a magazine with a warranty to boot.

Agree with you all.......I can buy a crate motor for 1350.00.......that wouldn't go far on rust repair, and unless you replace rusted panels, the rust will be right back.

Okay, I guess I'm out voted. Oh well, you all have gave some good points, but when I build my truck Im gonna build the motor then the tranny, frame, then body. So im not looking for a good body.

I would also try to buy a truck with as little rust as i could aford but if the truck was a factory 4x4, i wouldn't let body rust stop me from taking it home. Was the guys name shorty? If your looking for a 4x4 let me know. I know where several are at that are in good shape.
