Removing whole bed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, here is the question. I want to tear my bed down to the frame and redo it all. If I do this and in a couple of years I want to remove the whole bed so I can start behind the cab, how hard is it to remove the whole bed? Can 4 guys lift it or would I have to lift onto blocks?

Yeah it's no problem. Actaully, my wife and I lifted the wood fleetside bed off the 72 (she's one tough chick). The worst part was getting it over the tires. But with 4 guys, you shouldn't have that problem.

I removed all the wood first, since I was not planning on reusing it any way, I did not worry about how it was removed. Once all the wood was removed it only took 2 guys to remove the bed. Do not forget to disconnect the tie down rods bewteen the fenders and the frame. I forgot 2 of them and they bent my fenders slightly before we noticed them.

Dubie, you think your wife is tough? I had mine help me load a car front seat into my pickup. It was for a 2 door, and the back flipped forward. When it flipped back, it caught her thumb. When she pulled back, it REMOVED her thumb nail! She still moved it over to the truck. It's been a little harder to get her help lately, though. Oh, and her manicurist still charged her full price the whole time it was growing back.

I managed to move mine back to get at the cab corners with the help of a friend. Its a little more difficult for short people, he had to stand on a wooden block to get enough height to clear the wheels, lol.

No matter how many times my wife gets hurt, she still keeps coming back for more. Once in a while, she is the one that suggests we go work on the truck.
Southpa, how short/tall are you? You look tall in all your pics

I used two slings and a engine hoist and was able to remove mine alone. Remember to check everything under the bed before lifting. One of the previous owners had welded a muffler hanger onto the underside of the front of my bed. I starting to lift and noticed it without any damage but just check everything carefully before removing.

I'm the world's tallest midget and/or the world's shortest giant, Dubie. 6' on the nose. The easiest way to lift a box is to get my arms under the wheel arch and just stand up, its a back thing.
My friend is about 5'5" so his side is angled down and can't get the forward part of the bedside over the wheel.

I just did it this weekend. I used my engine hoist and a 4x4 post that I cut to 71" long. I put it under the lip of the box just in front of the middle stake pockets. A small piece of chain around the post and it was off. My wife kept it balanced and watched for problems as I rolled the truck out from under it. I wouldn't do it any other way. It was effortless and used a lot less beer than the 3 buddies method.

Jack it up.
Remove the rear wheels.
Put jackstands under the rear axle housings.
Buy beer and invite strong friends.
Piece of cake.

we took mine off even without taking off the wheels. Took 3 guys to carry.
