Blazer fuel tank capacity?

Sup guys, my first post on the Blazer forum.

Friend of mine alerted me to the location of a Blazer at the boneyard. Unsure of the year model, only that it's 67-72. He did look and found the gas tank is still in it but said it looks awefully small.

So what was the capacity of the Blazer tanks? Also, are the dash pads the same on Blazers and pickups? I might just make a Fathers Day trip to the boneyard for parts!

Re: Blazer fuel tank capacity?

I think they are 20 - 22 gallons, I really can't remember though.

Re: Blazer fuel tank capacity?

The dash pads should be the same. The dash in my blazer looks just like the one in my truck.

Re: Blazer fuel tank capacity?

Kool, thanks Krue. My buddy said the dash pad is intact, has possibly been recovered but thats fine by me. My truck doesn't have a pad at all, all I really need is the frame portion of it, I can recover it myself.

Now, with permission, I'd like to switch back to the tank question.
I don't want to carry a whole tool chest with me to the junkyard, I would like to take only the tools necessary for tank and dash pad removal. Not only is it a pain to carry that thing but I get paranoid about people who might really like my nice big tool box a little too much. Plus if you have a lot of tools on hand everyone is your new best friend. I don't mind helping folks out with a tool loan, have done it many times. But sometimes I don't have the patience to be bothered, I have a mission of my own to accomplish and would rather be left alone to do it.

I'm thinking: A ratchet and a couple of extensions, 1/2 & 9/16 sockets and wrenchs, flat head and phillips head screwdrivers and maybe a wire brush for cleaning threads on the tank straps and WD40. Plus of course the smaller stuff (3/8?) for the dash pad. Anything I'm missng?

All help/comments are appreciated.

Of course you will have the always needed vise grips. I always take a hack saw, hammer and chisel in case I have to "convince" something to come loose.

I was thinking about a utility knife, unless you are going to try and save
the hoses running to the tank, it is hard to get a screwdriver up in there.

Dikes/wire cutters make quick work of those pesky hoses.

The tank is held in by two straps running underneath (supposed to be anyway)
Remove them and all that's left is disconnecting the fill hose/return-vent lines and the wire to the gauge.

Re: Blazer fuel tank capacity?

Here's a tip for you (I haven't tried it yet but the mechanics at work swear by it). Instead of wd-40 take some wasp spray. The odds of running into a red wasp nest in a junkyard around here are pretty good, and it works as well or better than wd-40 on freeing up rusted bolts.

Re: Blazer fuel tank capacity?

Well, went for a Fathers Day pilgrimage today, to the boneyard. My son and I plus my neighbor and good buddy Mel. He is the one who told me about the tank being there.

I came within a nats a$$ of leaving the damn tank where it was. Why? Because per pick-n-pull policy they punch holes in all the gas tanks! Unfreekinbelievable! And believe it or not, one hole wasn't good enough, this tank has TWO! BAH!

I went ahead and pulled the tank with the intention of just getting the straps and mounting hardware, then decided to take the tank as well. I'll try to find a welding shop that can weld up the holes. The tank is in great shape otherwise.

Got the dash pad too. The padding and vinyl are wasted but the frame is in good shape, I think I can work with that.

Now a bit about this Blazer. Its a 69 or 70 I think? turn signals in the grill. CST emblems on the door. Label on the glove box door intact. I don't remember what all was listed but what I do remember was, 350 motor, posi rear (6 lug), bucket seats (long gone) medium olive green.
The floor in the (blazer tub??) is freekin prestine! I mean solid as a rock. Removable top and rear hatch intact. Chrome rear bumber was almost like new. And to top it off, California plates still on it!

I swear I wish I had the money I'd go back and buy the whole thing and sell it someone who would make good use of it.

But before we left two guys showed up to get the rear hatch off of it and decided to get the whole top.
According the markings on the side this Blazer has been at pick-n-pull less than a month. I give it another month and you'll be lucky if the frame is left. Sad
