Blew out my rear end on the way home tonight, I think.

I was on the Freeway and all of a sudden bang! And then klunk klunk all the way home. It would change gears so I don't think it's the tranny, I put it in all gears and it drove, when I put it in L1 it was really bad. I was able to go slow and it didn't make much noise and when I sped up it got a little louder. I would pull over and the noise would stop but then start up again. I don't think it's the U Joints. What do you guys think?

U-joint or carrier bearing.
If it was your diff, you would get a whining noise...untill it stopped. Then you'd be walking.

That's what I was hoping, how would I know if it was the tranny?

If it was the tranny you most likely wouldn't have all gears. I suggest sniffing the tranny fluid, if it smells a little burned, then you may have baked it.

But I think these other guys are probably right.

Yeah, here's my thoughts:

1. If it was your differential you wouldn't have made it home. Any sudden BANG noise will likely result in frozen axles - frozen truck. At least you'd have a vibration that shook the whole truck. It would vibrate your teeth out, and screech to no end.

2. If it was the transmission you'd have possibly the same result. The few times I've had an automatic transmission go belly-up it stuck in one gear, and P or N was out of the question. Also, the pressure built up so fast it busted the main seal, and I had a river of tranny fluid. The smell went with it.

IF you just had a lot of noise you either popped a U-joint loose, or your carrier bearing is broke. I've even heard of rocks bouncing off the road and getting jammed next to the driveshaft.

Just get under and look!

I had this happen last year on my 92 Z-71.
It started with shuddering during moderate acceleration, so I knew something was wrong. Then it started to click. I thought it was the T-case, so I put the rear end up on jack stands and idled it in the driveway (pointed toward the street, not my garage, of course) and found that all the noise was coming from the rearend. I found a guy who would look at it (was cold and didn't want to do it myself) in a couple of days. I kept driving it.
One day when I was heading back to work, it went "BANG" and got quiet again. RuhRoh. Then the clicking and shuddering started again. I was able to drive it 40 miles to Denver and get it fixed. The ring and pinion were shot. The pinion had two teeth that were cracked but still in place. The ring was missing one tooth and several others were not too good either. He said the carrier had probably shifted over and allowed the gears to mismatch. It ended up costing me several dollars, but it was still cheaper than any used rear end I could find - go figure... Everything except the axle shafts and the housing is new now, so I hope it will last another 150,000 miles.
I hope it's just your U-joints!

I'm pulling the drive shaft out now, the carrier bearing is shot, I knew that much, it has been for a while now. The middle set of U Joints are bad.

Yep, my guess would be the carrier bearing too! I had this happen to me not too long ago. My carrier bearing had seized, ripping the rubber support all to hell. Eventually the rubber tore up enough, and the metal surroud cracked, dropping the driveshaft out. My driveshaft was swinging around like a person with a hula-hoop!!!
