Question Question???

www.Fix-a-gauge.com
Has anyone heard of these folks? My temp gauge in my wife's 86 Suburban is pointing at 3 O'clock all the time. I've checked the sending unit and it's good and the engine is not hot. I haven't had time to go scrounge one at a salvage yard and it's not available from GM anymore (too old). They say they will fix 99% of the fuel, oil pressure, temp, voltmeters and amp gauges used on GM, IH trucks & buses, John Deere and Case tractors from 1969 to 1992. Prices are reasonable.

I've not heard of them before but the site looks good, apparently they are doing well. I just thought I'd answer because no one else was. So you wouldn't feel ignored.

I'd start with trying to track down where it got broke in the wiring harness. Disconnect the wire. Measure the resistance between the disconnected wire and ground with the key off. It should be nearly open. If it's shorted, there's your problem. Also, see what the guage does with the sender wire disconnected. I can't tell you what it should do without going out to my newer Chevy and seeing what it does - sorry.

Guages usually don't go bad. If it goes back down to somewhere reasonable with the key off, the wire is probably shorted to ground, most likely in the engine compartment, but hey, who knows, maybe some radio tech hooked into that wire for a ground by accident?

Your temp guage wire is grounded out someplace...check on the exhaust manifold...it is probably a melted mess on there.

I'm reasonablly sure it's the gauge because I disconnected the wire at the sending unit and measured the voltage and it was about 1.2 VDC. Checked the resistance of the temp. sender and it measured within 100 ohms of the one on my 86 truck. I checked the voltage on my truck with the wire disconnected and it read about 11 VDC. Sounds like the gauge has a problem. Oh yeah, the gauge doesn't hardly move when you disconnect the wire at the sending unit. It stays at 3 O'clock key on or off, engine warm or cold.
