Well I've been lurking around this site for a bit silently reading and learning for the most part,collecting the occasional part.( Great site by the way). I bought a 68 Lwb K20 about a year and a half ago. 350 4 on the floor and 4.56 gears. hadn't done much since then other than minor maint. I cleared out my garage on sat and today started to rip into it. Removed trailer hitch, lights and harness, and unbolted the bed. wasn't sure where to start, but I came into a 14b rear so going to rebuild from the back to the front. Felt so good to finally start after seeing so many motivating build threads

Also planing on pulling the bed completely apart, I tried to remove some of the carriage bolts but the just spin, I know you guys know a sweet trick for getting these out.

That truck looks like a great way to start yer project. Love the wheels. Also, I think the LWB's look best as a lifted 4x4. Good luck with it, and keep posting pics.

Don't try to loosen them, it will take forever. Tighten them and they'll break. Alot easier.

welcome parkerkl. first of all, you got the right Idea, mingle for a while , get your toes wet and show off your sweet truck, I love those trucks,especially the 67-68 grille , let alone a four wheel drive with heavy duty 3/4 ton running gear. nice project atleast somthing that will keep ya busy, the fun never ends especially when you do it yourself and it works or looks good, as far as your bed bolts , what usually happens is that the carriage bolts have a square head and the nut gets sorted rusted on and when trying to remove the square part just spins in the bed (as if you havent already figured out)
I would try the tightening method , but if that doesnt work , what about a cut off saw if room allows, if not what about cutting them off on the nut side witha cutting torch. or you could try and sock the nuts with penentrating oil, never that less good luck and nice lookn ride

nice starting point... soak the bolts in a good penertrating oil,,pay the extra money for the good stuff..good luck with your build

I just drilled out all 48 thousand of 'em... took a little over and hour but seemed the easiest way to me... used a bit about the same size as the bolt... went rather well. Nice rig by the way!

Tighten them till they break, Cutoff wheel if you can get to the bolts, or drill them out from the top.

I have to agree, the long bed 4X4 looks awesome. If I ever get my short bed done, my next will be a 4x4 lifted longbed.

I got lucky and most of mine came out easily.For the ones that didn't,I used a zipcut on the nut side of the ones I could reach and used a torch (very very gingerly) on the ones tucked inside the cross supports.
The thing that bugged me the most was that the bed was held together with half a million bolts,but gm still felt it necessary to tack the sides to the rear cross sill.

Thanks all for the kind words and advice. I soaked all the bolts over night. I only had about twenty minutes to play with it today(domestic duties were a callin') Two bolts came right out, and I drilled out three of 'em. Hoping to get an hour or two in tomorrow and have the bed off and apart, but we'll see what the bolts have to say about it.

I noticed this just last night for the first time and thought it maybe was a bit much, glad its not just me

Made a little progress today. Got left bedside off. I took a grinder and made a slot in the head of the bed bolts for a screwdriver worked like a champ! (used a dremel to make slots for the bolts in corners). If I can, I'll try for the other side tomorrow.
