Angry WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

I went out to start my truck this morning to go to work.
The truck started fine, I let it warm up for a couple of minutes.
I put it Drive and stepped on the gas, NO GO!
I put the gear selector in every gear and still no go!
Embarassed as hell, the wife drove me to work in her F@&d!!!
Can anyone tell me where to start investigating?
Thanx in advance
Dano

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

What could it be on the tranny, Torque converter? I also thought that maybe my linkage wasn't shifting the tranny, but I can feel the indents when I move the gear selector.

It might be the linkages.Has the tranny been rebuilt before to your knowledge?

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

Id say to my knowledge its the torque converter but only if your sure its full of fluid and its going into gear. if its not that then you have bigger problems.

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

This might be totally random, but I had the filter on my TH350 fall off and it wouldn't allow fluid to flow, so no gear would engage. The trans burned up shortly after that.

I haven't owned an auto truck since.

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

I had similar problems with the TH350 in the last two cars I drove when it was cold-no go unless they were well warmed. One however, had obvious problems, because it didn't like going into reverse, the other worked well all the time except when the temps dropped. I have a rebuilt TH350 in my truck now and haven't had any problems (is actually the one that slipped in reverse), so I too am curious.

Someone put your rear end on blocks? J/K Definitely sounds like a fluid or converter problem if there's no tranny noise.

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

i'd check the ground underneath for a leak first another thing try putting it in neutral and revving it up this will help prime the converter, i had a truck once that until you revved it up in neutral for a minute it wouldn't move at all. transmissions are funny something could be internally broke even, my 88 silverado was fine on the way to work one day then at lunch it wouldn't pull then it slung parts, in your case i'd think it was torque converter problems, wouldn't hurt to check the transmission lines etc, maybe the modulator valve line came loose? but even at that it would still pull just not shift

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

first thing i'd do would be crawl under the truck and see if your linkage is still hooked up to the transmission

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

The same thing happened to my boy's car and we pulled the pan off the tranny (Th350) and the s-link had fallen off the linkage to the valve body. I wish I had a picture but I lost it when the hard drive crashed on my computer.

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

I would let it warm up again and check the fluid. if the fluid level is ok the check the govenor. its under one of the covers on the side of the tranny.(I believe the right side cover)its just a shaft with a couple counterweights on it. if the springs or the gear on the govenor are trashed it will have the same symptoms as you've described.

the only reason I suggest it is because I have had two go out on me on two seperate trannies. some of the people I hang around with are ase certified techs(one is a tranny tech for gm) and have told me that the govenor going out is a one in a million. I guess I was just lucky!

Re: WTF:1970 c10 a no go!

Was dark when I got home.
I know the tranny was leaking fluid so I'll check that first at daybreak.
I had also thought someone stole the driveshaft, (they might have needed it), but it was still there.
The RPMs did not drop when I shifted into gear.
When I put the truck in neutral I could push it, so brakes aren't locked up. I have a feeling the the tranny is stuck in neutral, because no matter where the shifter is I can push the truck forward and backward.
Thanx, will keep you all posted.
