Cooking headers or...

Cookin some Hookers*, hooker recommends not using these headers for breaking the engine in because of paint failure / discoloring. My brother owns a Kustom paint shop in Indy and I ask him if the reason for this was the paint not being cured enough. He said that would be his guess so as soon as the wife left for her shopping trip I stuck one in. The coating was a lot harder compared to the uncooked one after four hours. Sure makes the house stink though, but it is a good stink..

The wife has to understand that the pay check isn't the only thing that she married. Rebuilt a motorcycle i n the living room before, still alive and married.

Re: Cooking headers or...

I bought an oven like that for $20 at a yard sale. The top burners didn't work and I didn't care. A friend and I welded up a large boax with a front door and a window, mounted the oven elements on the bottom and mounted the controls on the top. It's what we use for powdercoating and it works great. I can fit a whole axle in there!

The best thing is the house doesn't stink and the wofe doesn't get mad

Re: Cooking headers or...

don't forget to use the dishwasher to clean your parts. If you run the dishwasher for a few moments first... to get the walls all wet... and then run it empty when you're done... with soap, your after use cleaning will be minimal.

OR...
a leaking dishwasher can be had for minimal money, and it could be a dedicated parts washer.

Re: Cooking headers or...

Since I do the cooking the stove doesn't bother her near as much as all the parts strewn around. At -15 deg wind chill here it will have to stay this way for a while. At least the rotating assembly parts are in the my shop.

Re: Cooking headers or...

Lots of laughs from this thread I loved it, but on a more serious note I think the reason header manufacturers don't recommend breaking motors in with certain finishes is because if your timing is off on initial break in your headers can get red hot and that causes even ceramic coated header coatings to fail not to mention just painted headers. i never thought of that and its a hell of alot cheaper than buying a parts washer

We used to cook headers in the oven at Dominos Pizza in Garland Texas... this was back in '91-'92... I wonder if anyone's pizza ever tasted like metal or black header paint...

Re: Cooking headers or...

Curing coatings in a house and in an oven that food is served from is downright foolish. That is some of the most toxic stuff out there. We have powercoaters around here and they`ll cook you parts when they have a load for the oven.

Re: Cooking headers or...

I've seen the ceramic coating get fried off a set of headers before. It was during the cam break in period. The carb was way lean and the kid didn't figure it out until later, but he had a standard rotation water pump on his serpentine belt setup, so the engine wouldn't cool at all.

A couple of the pipes went from dull cherry red to bright red halfway through the cam break in.

Once they cooled you could see the damage was done.

I wouldn't use an oven you cook with to bake any parts. Like others have said, get a cheapy off of craigslist and use it.
