I learned my trade in the Navy in aircraft maintenance, however, if I had to do it all over again, I would definitely go into the Air Force.
Reason #1: The Air Force treats their personnel much much better. They live in Dorms not racks on a ship or some run down barracks. Their "Galley" is a friggin restaurant and the food actually tastes remotely like it should.
Reason #2: The equipment the airforce has is well maintained, not rusty hand-me-downs and ridiculous worn out tools.
Reason #3: Military protocol is a little less strict.
Make an informed decision and don't believe all the hype your recruiter says.

my grandfather retired navy back in '72, i think. that dude pushed boots for the last 3 years of his navy service. it shows in my dad. think red foreman from that '70's show, and you'll have my grandfather, only with less profanity. dude, ditch the girl. if she don't can't understand or care about what makes you happy, she aint gonna do it 10 years from now when you've got some real money tied up in other projects. relationships are a give and take, but there has to be a mutual respect and trust going both ways for it to work. you both got to have your own lives, if she can't deal. do like the wise men of this board have said to do, and go pick up some strange. concentrate on your education. you'll know when it's time to settle down, because the right girl will automatically show up. there won't be any questioning it. good luck. don't be a fool, wrap up your tool, and stay in school.

There is no doubt knowing what I know now, I would have joined the Air Force.

They defenitely take care of their people better than the Navy. They have more golf courses. They build all the people stuff first and then complain to Congress they need more money for an air strip...all in all it is an Air force Base.

The Navy does send you to sea...going to sea is tolerable but not comfortable. If you have to have unaccompanied duty in the AF...you still can call home and watch TV.

Rusty does not havemuch to do with it...par for the course...after all the Navy is in the salty water.

Food? About the same. Submarines have the best prepared food..comparable to the Air Force. Mainly because it is prepared in smaller batches.

Trust me I know. I got married when I was 19. That was a BIG mistake. No kids we just "loved each other" Pffffft!! we grew apart so much it was ridiculous. Now I beleive if you are not willing do die for a girl, so to speak, then she is not worth it. I wouldn't get serious about any one until your a least 25-27.

Great thread. Ok here goes, from experience. Get a piece of crap $500 beater for the booty calls and leave the truck at home. If they really like ya they will ride in anything. First test. Then go for the common interests. Second test. Good advice Pickles, I was told all my life not to marry till I was 30. I almost made it. I was 28. Funniest crap I've read in a while. Maybe it's my age but that girl scares me.

i just finished 10 years in the navy, and am now a Disabled Veteran.

Although we dont have to march and run 30 miles a day, walking around on steel decks, climing ladders, and operating heavy doors / hatches all day, takes alot out of you. I've now got back problems, both knees are shot (had multiple surgeries), and arthritis in both shoulders, not to mention the hearing loss and other problems, and i'm only 28.

It was a great time though, the people i met, skills i learned, the places i went. I wouldn't trade any of that for the world.

Navy???? Dude the ARMY!!!!! Come on now. But in all honesty man, go Airforce. I'm in the Army now, and love it. But I have worked with some AF and it sounds a million times better!!! Way less tours in the desert too! I have a cousin in the AF and one in the Navy, and I'm in the Army.

I bought my wife her own car, I just don't do mud after the money, time and effort that is put into a nice vehicle car or truck. My wife understands this.

I would put some bucks in your girl friends tank rather then cleaning my truck and let her know that she will be part of the clean up crew when it's a nice day if you have to do the drive way .... you will never get her to help you to clean up your truck and if you do she's a keeper.

I mean after all this is love right!

This may seem harsh so let me expand on this a bit. Linda my wife is the type of person that will help where ever she can. We were just out in the shop organizing the winter projects and decided that the shop really needed to be reorganized to allow for this. We will be going out to the shop to do this and it will be a full day at least. We want to restore a antique (cirica 1915) bed room suit so we will be able to have more room to restore the Vette. Linda will be involved very much so in both these projects. The last thing that she would want is to drive down a dirt road .... it makes a difference when they get invoved as their hard work is invested as well as your own. On the first nice day we get we want to get pictures of the 70' GMC and go to a country market to buy some apples. Linda already has said that we will park on the road and walk down to the market and pack the apples back to the truck rather then drive over the dirt road that goes right to the market.

To each their own, I'm no marriage counselor all I know is this works for me. Oh by the way Linda wanted a Mercedes Benz so she picked out what suited her so it's working for her to. All is fair when you work together.

I've been in this situation and this is what I did. My girlfriend lived almost an hour from me in the most snooty rich neighborhood I have ever seen which contained some of the largest speed bumps on earth. She always wanted me to come and pick her up. I refused after the first couple of times because I was destroying my truck. She got pissed so I bought a 1985 Chevy celebrity that is 2-tone brown with a hellacious exhaust leak and a huge rust spot on the door for $500. I bought the car to drive to work and keep mileage down on my truck, but it also served as my transportation to her neighborhood. She didn't like the beater and neither did her neighbors. Long story short we are no longer together and I still have my truck and my car and I am single. Now a little dirt I don't mind, but if you are having to destroy your truck to go get this chic then get a beater car or put some fuel in hers. You also have to ask yourself, would she do the same sort of thing for you.
