Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

OK, all you familiar with the older cars & trucks (30's, 40's, 50's ??), I need help locating a glove box door, and have no idea of what older vehicles might have something close to what I am looking for. It needs to be in the neighborhood of 15"-17" wide, and 5"-7" tall. Needs to be flat, no curvature at all top-to-bottom or side-to-side. Squared off corners are OK, but would prefer something rounded. Basic shape should be rectangular, oblong, or wider at the top than the bottom (like the OEM door).

I hope this makes sense There are just enough fluctuations in the OEM 67-72 doors on the rolled edges that make it not sit flat to the dash without some gapage in various places. At least not flat enough for me. I could weld another piece to the back and fill in the gaps, but I am also open to the idea of using something totally different.

For those that haven't seen my build thread, I took an old stock door and sectioned it to better match the size of the new gauge bezel:

I can get you a pic of mine and send it to you. You may have to modify it a little also.

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

I also found this one on eBay, 1961 Corvair Monza. Looks like the right size and shape I'm looking for.

Since you oriented this towards us "older" guys, you have to understand that our memories aren't as good as they used to be. I owned a VW and a Corvair. but your question didn't even register on my grey matter. Thanks for pointing out how old I am.

LOL ChevLoRay! Sorry? I think?

Haven't looked at my build thread yet, eh Shane? I will cut the hole once I settle on a door.

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

Oooooooo, thanks corn!!! That one has a curve to it, so that wouldn't work. BUT..... if I can find a 3/8" piece of aluminum, I could cut one to shape, them do the ball milling myself. I guess I should put that mill to good use! I like the shape of the Corvair lid, then do the ball milling in that shape......

Hmmmmm

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

I dug out this "older yet" VW door on a recent trip back home.Thought I`d toss in the radio delete and 61-68 Dodge truck dash surround while I was at it:

The glovebox door is teeny, like 10" across.

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

Thanks for the pic special-k. Yeah, I think 10" will be too narrow. I'm thinking more of the 15"-17" range.

Thanks Shane!! That's kind of the story of this truck......just a little bit different.

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

You certainly have a nice example of your talents for us to see. Thanks for the posting.

By the way, my Corvair was a Spyder Convertible and I believe the glove box door had an engine-turned finish. Since you mentioned ball-milling the piece to support the door, maybe engine-turning the finish of the door would add to the flavor, not that what you have already done doesn't have class. Congrats!!

Re: Looking for an old, flat hot rod glove box door

Thanks special-k and ChevLoRay!

special-k - I'll have to check out the 66'ish door and see what they are like, thanks!

ChevLoRay - Sounds like a great idea, but I'm not a big fan of the engine turned look. Actually my latest brainstorm is to find a piece of 3/8" to 1/2" or even 5/8" thick billet aluminum and make the whole door from scratch. Have it taper from around 1/2" to 5/8" think at the bottom to about 3/8" at the top. Then I could ball mill a few lines to match the gauge bezel, or a bowtie, or ?? into the face of it. Cutting the hole for the latch button wouldn't be too big of a deal.

Of course, it's just all ideas at this point.
