Stepside Question. Would it look crazy if I.....

mounted just a spare wheel and center cap on my side mount bed? looking through the truck assembly manual it appears that the suburbans were sometimes shipped with a spare wheel, but no tire mounted on it.

were stepsides ever shipped this way? I have new Corvette Rallyes on the way and they are completely powdercoated so they look nice even inside the rim.

just wondering

Re: Stepside Question. Would it look crazy if I.....

Do you mean like these, or mounted on the inside of the bed?

Personally I like the beds with the spare and fender cut out. Many don't though.

i think that without the tire, the rim would be too far from the dent in the fender and it might look dumb.
Just my opinion though...

Re: Stepside Question. Would it look crazy if I.....

Back then a spare wheel and tire were optional. If you ordered a spare tire you got the wheel too but if you just ordered the wheel that's all you got. I remember new stepsides on the lot with just a wheel mounted on the side mount. It was very common to find just a bare wheel on the under bed mount too.

The question is: what good is a wheel with no tire? Back then people would put a used tire on the new wheel to save money but they did put on a tire.

70step. You my friend just gave me inspiration again. my 69 is the same 504 medium olive as the first pic and the second says to me that a side mount can actually look quite custom. the side mount spare is probably the largest love/hate option on our year of trucks.

thanks for the pics!

Ever see one with spares on both sides?? I seem to recall seeing some in my distant past.....and I mean distant. May not have been on anything newer than the 55 first series.

Keep the spare and the tire, bro! I think you should buy another complete wheel set up and use that up there. May have to lock it in somehow. Wife is gonna love that!

Custom-mount one on the other side, too. It`s a throw-back to when the upscale cars ran dual spares just to balance out the look.
I think just a wheel would look dorky and just bring alot of,:what`s up with the wheel?" questions.A conversation piece, for sure.

I personally don't care for the spare tire fender, but that green 67 looks cool. I don't recall seeing one like that before.

putting one on the passenger side would create quite a blinde spot IMO, thats why they were always on the drivers side.

Re: Stepside Question. Would it look crazy if I.....

There was a time if you ordered a new chevy with a spare wheel you got no back bumper,But if you got the Factory bumper you got no spare wheel.Or something like that!(thats what my dad always told me) I like the side mounted spare, you dont have to crawl under the truck to get a Dirty-Muddy spare down in the dark!(all flats happen at night in the rain don't they)?

Re: Stepside Question. Would it look crazy if I.....

Saw something on the home page with my name on it and I re-read this post. Got a weird idea.....with all of the different items mounted on a hitch reciever, why not a mount for a spare tire/wheel? Kind of a continental kit....sorta. Cheesy? Yeah....did you think it wouldn't be? But there has to be someone out there who has done it.....just to be different.
