removing abs
i have a 96 s10 that has abs on it. i don't feel that they stop the truck as well as they should. the brakes work great until you have to slam on them hard. i have had abs before and know how it works, but my truck seems to lose too much braking power when they come on.
is there anyway to disconnect the abs and leave the truck with manual brakes? any help would be appreciated. i figured i would start here... ryan.

there should be a cable that runs to the hub. you should just be able to take it off. cause i thought ABS runs of a magnet then the computer understand the speed and when the tire start to lock up it release pressure in the brake line right or wrong?

I have heard of 4x4' ers removing the fuse while haveing fun

our i rember the brake lines run through a little box which is where all the magic happens, take it out and reroute the lines.

i cant find a fuse for the abs and i don't see a box that the brake lines run through. i had looked at the lines before and i dont see anything that would be able to remove brake pressure....
i wish i had a 67-72 so i could actually work on it. computers suck... ryan.

the box can be protected, it will either run through tthe frame or in the engine bay. this little box is what allows the operation of ABS......you migh tnot have abs. did you look for the censors on your hub? it should be a wired that ran along the A-arm and spidle.

all u hafta do is disconnect one of the wheel sensors and the abs will disable itself

Just push the emergency brake down one click. That should de activate it so I'm told. It will also turn headlights off on trucks equiped with always on headlights.

Ryan,
I dont reccomend disconnecting any safety related equipment if you ever get into an accident and someone die's and thay find you have intentionally deactivated the ABS system your screwed buddy. Just leave them hooked up your better off. Have you installed aftermarket wheels & tires if so you may have confused the computer and it's not getting the proper signals from the wheel sensors anymore. The computer can be recalibrated to compensate for this but you must go to the chevrolet dealer for that. |

thanks. i had it checked out at the dealership in chico, and it brakes a little bit better now. funny they say they didn't do anything.....

somrtimes the valve will stick inside the abs unit and not seat properly causing a soft pedal---putting the vehicle into an abs stop will seat the valve and make a hard pedal
