hello,

I just purchased an apache. the first of many challenges is the ignition switch. it doesn't need a key to start. now, I purchased a new cylinder but I can't get the damn thing out. I just don't want to pay the locksmith $80/hour. And I've tried all the suggestions posted here. so now I'm thinking I'll just cut out the old and put in new. but where to find the new? On various parts sites I've found everything, but nothing for a 1961. So, I'm thinking I'll buy an universal ignition switch that is described as compatable up til 59. it looks like it will work. it's on chevyduty.com. ANY SUGGESTIONS, WARNINGS, ADVICE?

Call chvy duty and ask them if they have an ignition switch...............I've done a lot of business with them in the past and have not had a bit of trouble with them...............they also answered some of my questions................................HEMMIT

levy, have you tried bending a paper clip and inserting it in the holes on either side of the cylinder? You should be able to "trip" the tumblers that hold the cylinder in by doing this. By the way, my '62 did not require a key to turn the ignition switch either when I got it. I've been in several early sixties cars and trucks that were like this. Mine had a particular spot on the ignition that you had to turn the key to to "lock" it. Not sure how yours is...

thanks for the info! i'm going with the '59 universal ignition. should work. but i'll let ya know. the old will NOT come out. and even if i eventually get it out it will be pretty messed up. already is. this isn't the perfect solution but i'm not going for stock correct either.

The paper clip in the trip holes should have worked, but I'll admit it's tricky. except for body parts, I've had a lot of luck finding 1961 parts in Obsolete Chevrolet. I think they're based in Georgia. You'll find that you'll run into problems like this the whole time you're fixing up a '61. For some reason no one carries many parts specific to '60s and '61s.
