New Here and Need Help!

I have a 64 C20 283 with a 3 on the tree. I read through the headers threads and came upon these http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku. They showed up yesterday and I realized that there is linkage in the way. I noticed some people on here have these same headers so I was wondering how you got around the clutch linkage (i think that's what it is.) Any help would be greatly appreciated! I need to get these old ramhorns off!

I installed the same headers on my '66 Chevy C10 with a factory 327. The linkage you are having difficulty with is the "Z" bar from the driver side frame rail to the engine block. I removed this assembly and installed the headers.

After the header was installed, I inserted the "Z" bar back in place between the header tubes. It would not fully engage the clutch, so I removed the lower arm and repositioned it to allow the assembly to operate properly. After welding it in the new position, I adjusted the pushrod and everything worked properly.

Unfortunately, I did not record this process with pictures, however, it was a relatively easy modification. I hope this information is helpful.

Yep..............exactly what i did with my linkage..........................repositionrd the bottom and rewelded on in the right position................................hemmit

The best thing to do is remove your Z bar, install the headers, cut off the bottom arm, install the Z bar and mark the new position prior to welding in new location. It is very difficult to get a clear picture of the assembly installed due to the clutter down there.

It may be a not so popular response or opinion, but in reality, the ram horns aren't so bad. In fact, they are pretty good.

You may want to think a bit and leave them where they are rather than learning the pain of headers...

Header bolt technology has come a long way in the past twenty years, as well as, the quality of the mounting flanges of the headers currently on the market. I wouldn't hesitate installing a good quality set of headers and a set of ARP header bolts. Many of the problems with headers have been addressed with the latest technology. In any case, good luck with your install.

I have a number of factory V8 trucks '64-'66 with the factory Ram horn cast iron exhaust manifolds. They are tried and true.

I have a built 350 waiting in my buddy's garage right now. I'm trying these headers out on the 283 for a little while though to see how I like them
