Whining sound

This is my first 4 wheel drive truck. I have the 208 transfer case. We got 12 inches of snow yesterday so this the first time I have had it in 4 wheel drive. I have a whining sound while in 4 high. Is this normal?

Re: Whing sound

Hard to diagnose a sound through a computer, but it's probably just the t-case chain and/or the front drivetrain -- normal.

Re: Whing sound

No whine is normal. Where it is coming from and what to do about it are the real questions.
Are you sure that it is the transfercase?
Lube full?
U-joints ok?
Automatic hubs?

Re: Whing sound

U joints are fine. Sound only comes when I put in 4 wheel drive. Coming from right underneath the cab. I will check transfer case fluid. Just had tranny rebuilt so I hope they refilled the transfer case.

Re: Whing sound

Yes, there is a certain amount of whine when 4wd is in use, totally normal.

Re: Whing sound

I just put a 700r4 with the np208 transfer in my 61 4x4, in 4x4 there is no whine at all. I would check the fluid quick.

Re: Whing sound

^^ Funny post!

When I said it's probably normal, I was assuming a very slight sound. Virtually every 4WD I have driven make a slight but noticable sound (could be described as whine, or whirring, or humming sound -- everyone hears things differently) with 4WD engaged. Obviously a loud whine is not normal and needs to be found & fixed. Didn't mean to mislead anyone...
