ignition wire

I have a friend with a 66 suburban custom that is having trouble with the main red wire going to his ignition switch. The conector that goes through the firewall is heating up so bad that it is melting the connector that goes through the firewall. This is even happening with the motor not running and the ignition switch just in the on position. He is using an hei dist and a one wire high output alt.

thanks for any help..

James
