How much timing...

Hey guys,

I'm running a '76 454 std bore, with 781 heads 2.190/1.880, Comp Cams XE 274h, matched springs, CC full Roller Rockers, MSD Digital 6, 85551 Dist, HVC Coil (blue), Edelbrock Air Gap, 1407 carb.

I've been babying it this summer what little I've driven it just working out the bugs in various systems... It's just a cruizer, not been on the track and probably wont be. But, that last couple times I stabbed it, it wants to studder above 4k rpm, although it pulls well between 3k and 4k... Plus after I've driven it a bit and turn it off for a short period of time, when it starts it grunts like the timing is off.

What is a good starting point for the timing on this setup?

Thanks,

Kenny

Hadn't checked this thread in a few days.. Truck is still parked with fuel pump issue.

When I installed the cam originally, I didn't degree it (correct term?) so how do I get 36-38 total timing when timing marks only show 0-? at the balancer??

Thanks!
