Should we scrap an inline 6?

my friend and his brother just went up to nebraska during thanksgiving break... granted we are still in highschool and thats why he had some time off... anyways he brought back a 49 chevy 3/4 ton.. the head was cracked 37 years ago so they parked it and left it...the body and everything is still solid its just all surface rust... but without a head on it all the pistons and stuff is froze up because the block is all rusted.. pistons are rusted solid... should we scrap it or take it somewhere spend some money and resleeve it and bore it out and reuse it..we were wanting to put a crate 350 in and get a stroker kit for it.... im sure somebody on here might want the inline 6 if we dont use it....so thats why i posted it on here

Re: Should we scrap an inline 6?

My 50 has a nonpressure 235 in it right now. When I start working on my truck I will probably give the dang thing away but I bet no one will want it even tho it runs good. If your motor is the original engine I would junk it. It's not worth the money to fix. If someone was going to stay with a 6 in their truck I'm sure they would get a 54-62 6 cylinder because they look like the old ones and are full oil pressure which make them a hundred time better engine.

let it sit for now Scrap metal isnt worth the gas it takes to get there and back right now. China got what they wanted and took some our best vehicles ever and built that freaking bird nest now its getting torn down also.

but in the future scrap it. sorry for rambling.

Re: Should we scrap an inline 6?

Normally I encourage people to keep everything as original as possible but this looks like an exception to the rule. If the engine has been sitting out in the environment without a head for 38 years than I am sure every square inch both in and out will be rust covered. Also it is a low pressure oiling engine with babbitt rods to begin with. If he wants an old six he needs to go with a 1954 or newer 235 engine. Looks the same but much more advanced in its mechanicals. Also their are numerous places that sell hot rod parts for those motors. Of course you can always do the SBC route.

Re: Should we scrap an inline 6?

^ I agree

I usually say, if the engine is in good running condition, and you are swapping it out, do not scrap it right away. There are always people looking for a replacement motor especially when they are restoring their truck to original condition and the engine is missing or beyond repair. Now in the case of the engine being beyond repairable or in a state that would be costly to fix, I say scrap it as you may not even be able to give it away. If you can't sell it after a certain amount of time, then scrap it.

In your case, scrap it, might as well do it whenever, even now as I doubt steel prices are going up anytime soon.

Re: Should we scrap an inline 6?

I agree with upgrading to a newer 6. 6's are becoming really cool, but not too many people have figured it out yet. What that means is that you can find a 6 for pretty cheap, from someone pulling theirs out to put a 350 in.

Re: Should we scrap an inline 6?

I'd just pour oil in all the cylinders put a high torque tractor starter on that and let the chunks fly!!!! It would make a cool video anyway.

Probably rip every tooth off the starter ring.

Oh I dunno about that. I've seen some pretty nice rods set up with Lexus V8's. Wouldn't mind tossing a nice V12 out of something like a BMW, Benz, Jag into a truck either

That being said, there are plenty of people who do some pretty amazing stuff with inline sixes. Take a gander at inliners.org and you'll see some pretty nice rigs.
