thinking about becoming a distributor.any thing i should know about mac?

Hmmm good tools .I got rid of everytool I had that wasn't Mac even bought the Mac Cabinet. However ; Mac did not last long . They all were fired and never see the trucks anywhere around here these days. Not sure what happened. Was told that the truck , and all the tools are owned by Mac and the fellas doing the selling were on a salary or commission and were not real happy with that arrangement. I would buy MAC any time any day. Would like to pick up a few more of them MAC tools. Just did not work out around here. Good luck .

I bought quite a few Mac tools when I worked at the dealership, but it was nearly impossible to get them fixed when they were broken. For example, my ratchet heads kept stripping out, and he wouldn't replace them or always promised to bring another gear set. Good luck with you venture!

from the guys I've talked to, Mac is just a job. If you want YOUR business and can provide the capital, Matco is the way to go

I think is has to do with the owner because my former Mac supplier owns his own truck. He is my former Mac man because I quit my job that he showed up at. I still see him from time to time driving that big yellow box van.
I had talked to him about becoming a tool truck owner, he gave some good advice, but I wasn't ready to do the commitment. He said ALOT of long hours, and was barely scraped by until he got established. for couple of years. But now he is pretty well set.

The snap on truck comes to my dealership every thursday and so does matco now the mac guy is MIA. I have thirty techs and they buy mostly Snap On and Matco because of the drivers being there every week.

I have the exact same issue with them, as does pretty much everyone I ever speak to. I know many MANY people (including myself) who won't buy therre tools becouse of this problem.

My dad used to buy Mac, but Snap-On passed the "extreme" test he built for it.

I use Craftmans now, they break, I run down and get a new one, no-problems!!!

ive had mac, matco, snapon, sk, and cornwell.. i wouldnt give 2 cents for anything cornwell. S K is good, bout the same as craftsman. matco and mac are both about the same quality as each other; lower than snapon but higher than SK.

i must agree, the mac guy we have is a PITA to get stuff warrantied. he does own his truck though.

we can't keep a matco driver. the shop i work at went for 4 years with no matco dealer, got a new one, and he quit withen a year. our snapon guy has been running for 32 years. (can you tell i prefer snapon?)

the only thing I would add to what blue71 said, is anything of Macs that rachets, is not worth having.

We have had Snap-On and Mac around my area for years. The Snap-on guys have changed twice in my time, but the MAC guy is a stable and owns his truck and has been around for 25 years. Matco came in aand lasted only a year or two and then moved out of the area. It is easy to end up with a business that is up against an established one and you will have to beat the competition somehow. Any one of these businesses is exactly that "A business" and it can come and go with a small blast of wind. You own the truck and you purchase the stock to sell under a business name. It boils down to how good you are with people and how good you are with sales. The banker is going to be your best firend in this. He will have to let you set up some seriously expensive stock and be ready to back you in times of slow business. I ran a Farm Store for a few years and the art of knowing WHAT items to stock is a learned ability. The trucks visit the shops weekly and the billiing for tools and cabinets is paid weekly, so don't get a too soft of a heart for these guys unless you want to have to go and collect your merchandise back. You have to feed your business first and take care of them second. Hopefully you already know your area and will not have to go in and introduce yourself, as you learn where your best business is at the same time.


By the way, if a guy calls you at 9 PM (on a sunday night) looking for a tool, Please be like my Snap-On guy is and tell him SURE, come on over---that buys more respect and loyalty to you and your products than any thing you could ever pay to do. My guy has helped me out of some nasty stupid projects at the dumbest hours. If he tells me the price is high, I DONT'T CARE, anymore. I just know that I can depend on him and he gets my business.

I own a bit of everything. Never have had a problem with my Mac guy. He is here almost every week (except family emergencies). I have never had a problem with warranty returns. He has been a good friend for the past 8 years and has never done me wrong. I also buy from snap-on, matco, and STS. The only bad thing is all are a bit expensive, but none have ever given me problems with warranty and the service has always been outstanding. Just my $0.02.

well heres an update myself and the wife go to mac tool school may 10th threw the 20th, should sign papers while were ther.this is going to be her venture with some{or lot} of my labor.

Go to www.streetcruizin.com and post a question for woodzracer. He just went through their program and is starting with Mac. He can tell you first hand what is involved.
