Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

Probably finer than what you'd buy specifically for sandblasting, but it'll do the job....as long as it is dry and free of cat crap!

Yes. What he said. Make sure it's kinda clean. It's not quite abrasive enough but it'll do the trick.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

i've had very bad results with play sand// seems like its not a uniform size and every time i've got it had lots of moisture// another thing to worry about is where it is mined and packaged is salt content

i always stick with bagged blasting sand that is sterilized and cleaned plus it is very fine and of uniform size// i screen everything i put in my blaster and really dont find any pebbles or debris that will screw up blasting and cause clogs

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

I just blasted my cab with playsand. It worked pretty well but it gets everywhere. Cleaned up the inside of cab with shop vac and air compressor to blow the sand out. I used about 10-12 bags. I also used a kitchen sifter to sift out the larger particles before putting them in the blaster. I am pleased with the results.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

let the blast tank fill with air then turn the valve to release the sand from the tank then finally turn the valve at the end of the air hose that lets the sand out of the nozel.

Let the air build up in the blast tank to about 80 psi before opening the remaining valves.

How big (gallons) is your air compressor ? I would wear a face mask unless you like sand in your mouth and lungs

Sent you an email.

I can put them up on my photobucket page or you can open a photobucket account and put them on there. It's free and easy if you don't put a ton of photos on.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

Ok,

I dont suggest play sand because I dont like the pits, but what do I know.

I use starblast, aluminum oxide, glass bead or black beuty for frames only.

Steps to blasting.

Have all valves closed.

The one from the line in will supply the tank, nad is the first and last to be used.

The one on the bottom is for the proportioner for the abrasive.

If you have a cheap Harbor you may have a c/o on the nozzle just keep it open. If it is closed and you start letting abrasive in the abrasive hose line you may get buildup in the hose and have to start to take the hose apart to empty the hose.

On my blaster I open the line in (pressurize the tank), (if you have a cut off on the hose just keep it open, start to open the c/o on the bottom of the tank, but only about half way. When the sound starts to not sound like a jet engine taking off, your about were you want it. if it has a heavy stream of abrasive, you are just wasting the abrasive, so back off a little or youll be empty before you know it.

I blast at the shop o.s. with a large tarp with a support like my dumpster on the back (clamped to hold in place). Maybe have plywood on the sides to keep it from blasting everywhere. When done lift the sides of the tarp, and sift into screen into 40 gallon trash can with wheels, and a lid to keep the mice, cats, and moisture out.

If you buy river and or play sand it will always have moisture, so lay it out on a plate of steel on a dry, sunny day, and the end of the day sift into something to screen the size to fit your nozzle.

Also think about resperation. Silica sand is a big cause for silicosis. I use an air fed hood, but a welding resperator will help. Think small particles.

Use dry air if you can, and if not drain your tank religiously. It is VERY frustrating when the abrasive clumps in the bottom of the tank. You then will have to stop everything, take it apart, and clean it out. ASK ME HOW I KNOW?

Also, a set of coveralls, or clothing that can be removed prior to coming into the house would be suggested (to keep the misses from kicking your b-hind).

A painters sock (for your head) would be suggestible, or it will take forever and many showers to get it all out of your hair.

Also, heavy rubber gloves to protect your hands, will help reflect the abrasives off of them. I bought long ones to go all the way to my arm pits and them a shirt over that.

HAVE FUN.

If you have MS Windows.. you can right click your pics and it will ask you what program to open with. Highlight and click Paint. The picture will look huge When it is open you will click on the bar where it says Image. It will open up another box where you need to choose stretch/skew or resize/skew. Then it will show the first box is for horizontal size and will show 100% highlited in blue. type in 20. Hit the tab button or click on the vertical box beneath it and type in 20 and click OK. The picture should be resized and you will click on File in the upper left hand corner and hit Save. If you click on Save as you can give it another file name allowing you to keep both pics. This should allow you to post pics using the attachment method on this site. If it doesnt work for you I can shrink them for you and post them if theyre not already.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

I have been using black beauty through my blaster, mine is 110 lb pressurized tank. Black beauty is coal slag for those who don't know, I have been using the fine grit size...works good on all sheet metal parts. The panel will feel like 80 giit paper when you are done, but a couple coats of a good primer (I use k2 primer) will make it as smooth as a babies bottom. I have read not to use sand because of it causing silicosis, I think all sand contains it. You will need a BIG compressor to run your blaster, they are huge users of air. I have a 80 gallon tank 6 hp compressor, I can only blast for about 15 minutes then have to wait for the compressor to catch up and cool down.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

No play sand. You need fine and consistant grains.Look at play sand or sand supplied for masonry. It`s got bead sized bits in there. If it does pass through w/o problems(aren`t there enough already, like moisture?)it will strike the material inconsistantly and possibly leave pocks in the material.
There`s a reason why silica is what sand is used.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

i buy medium grit sandblasting sand at our local masonary/brick supplier. The guy brings it out on a pall
et and puts it on my trailer. They all different grits, but the med works best. It cost slightly more than playsand, but it is bone dry and screened. I wouldnt use play sand BTDT
seems like the blast sand is about $5 or $6 for 100lbs IIRC

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

FYI using Sand in any form will cause silicosis if you don't wear a very good respirator. Silicosis causes something similar to miner lung or black lung wear the silica cuts your lung tissue and makes it scar. Even a little exposure can cause you greif.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

Not to steal the thread here.. I am using playsand from HomeDepot. I have had no problems as long as you let it dry out and screen it. I tried using walnut shell (fine, course) and had nothing but clogging problems. I upgraded my dryer and switched to play sand. Yesterday I got more done than I have in 3-Weeks. I am also a rookie but learned you gotta control the flow of media or its a total waste of time.

Re: Quick can i sandblast with playsand?

The stuff I use is manufacted in Emmet ID, 5 bucks for a 100lb sack, it is quartz you can get it in 30,coarse 50med, and 70fine, I warped my hood with the 30, wouldnt reccomend it, except for a frame, but the 70 is almost like dust and works like a champ!
