A Safety Alert
This was posted on another forum I frequently visit and After reading and realizing, Hey I do that...And Wow, that is crazy, I felt I need to pass it along before someone is injured from this freak occurance. So please, Pass along to others and let them know about this.
If someone knows how to make it bigger, Please do so. I can read it fine on my computer but apparently it is small on others.

Good Lord. I know I've done that a time or two! I remember hearing of phosgene in a chemistry class in college, but never put the two, tig or mig welding close to brake cleaner, together.
there's something I need to forward to my motorhead buddys. thanx for posting!!

Brake cleaner is nasty stuff- far worse than carb cleaner IMO. After years of using both spraying off parts while holding them in my hand, I fight skin problems that only steroid creams and exposure to sunlight can help. Even though I rarely use the stuff much now, I still fight the problems. The skin around my knuckles drys out & gets infected every winter. I don't understand the sun deal, but somehow sunlight or exposure to welding light helps alot- I think it has something to do with the UV rays adding vitamins to my skin & sweating
 20+ years ago I found out you do NOT use brake cleaner to clean up a choke/ carb throat with the engine running when you run out of carb cleaner. One wiff of the exhaust fumes just about knocked me out.

Great post. Sometimes I clean the area I'm gonna weld with brake clean. Never again, scary stuff.

I will be using something else from now on. I have always used brake cleaner to clean metal before welding, but I make sure to wipe it off real good with a dry cloth and blow it of pits or crevices with air. If I remember right, just the other day the dude on Extreme 4x4 was showing off these shop rags using brake cleaner to clean metal before welding.

Whew scary stuff good info for sure...I once had a co worker that thought he had discovered the best anti spatter in the world while welding an oil tank I thought he had wiped tip dip on the surface, I asked him what it was and he told me it was solvent from the parts washer...I was livid
 and he wanted to  take me out side and what not I just sat him in my office handed him the MSDS for the solvent and left him for a 1/2 hour or so when I returned he was  The problem with consumer products is that you don't get the MSDS and after reading a few of those you get a different perspective.

haha.. I've done that. only ****ed me up for about an hour though... thought it was just the paint burning somehow.. as i though the brake clean already evaporated.. guess not!

The safety guy at my work has just recently brought this up as well. I have not done my own research yet but what I got from our guy is that the brake cleaners that are clorinated are the ones you have that problem with. The parts stores here in California such as Kragen, Autozone, Pep Boys dont even sell clorinated brake cleaner anymore, for that mater I think that they are not even aloowed to sell them anymore.
Like I said before this is just my take on what our safety guy said so if any of you know any different please correct me. I do the same thing as the rest of you but We have not been able to get chlorinated brake cleaners in my shop for sometime now. |

you know, i just welded up a bunch of stuff that was wiped down with laquer thinner. right now i have chills, and my whole body hurts. i dont know if im coming down with something or if the thinner messed me up. i read the label on the can and it really didnt go into detail except dont drink it or you may die.
this is a good thread. i printed off that letter for all my guys to read. |

any time i weld i use a small fan to pull the fumes away from me. i have had to many friend's end up with oxygen tanks from welding.
