Axle shafts from non posi to posi

Is there any difference in the axle shafts from a posi to a non posi. I have the chance to get a posi gear set out of a wrecked 67 and I want to put it in my 72, but I wanna know if all the shafts are the same.

Dubie,
I'm pretty sure they're identical. When I was having my axles worked on, we put an Eaton posi in the pumpkin, and I don't think we had to order different shafts.

posi's work alot better with chrome pumpkin covers. if you change to posi be aware that there is a special additive that you have to use with the rear end grease

Sorry Tim but 70 and up use longer axles than 69 down housings. The only way you can use that 67 housing is to use the 6 bolt axles or get custom axles. I have heard of people re-drilling bolt patterns as well but the idea wouldn't thrill me.

If I am reading your post correctly you are just trying to see if the carrier will fit the axles? the carrier will fit into any 12 bolt truck rearend long or short and use the axles that belong with that rearend. you want to change to a posi, easy just change the carrier. the axles all have the same splines and everything and they used the same axles regardless of posi or open. you should be able to swap carriers and not have to worry about a thing. just make sure you use the thicker gear oil for a limited slip/posi in it or you will burn up the clutches. the diff cover will work just fine there was no difference. the stock cover is usually a little stronger than a chrome jobbie though.

dubie you can use the carrier and gears from the 67 into the 72. You may get away with just swapping carriers as long as the carriers have the same range of ratio gears.


Pretty much in these truck... 307 carrier is for 307 gears. and the 373 carrier uses 373 or 411 gears assuming this is all 1/2 ton stuff which Im pretty sure you have.

The axle spline count is the same on 67-72 axles but the lenght does change in 70 to a little longer. In 71 the axles have 5 bolt pattern compared to the older 70 down version which have 6 bolt.

Gears sets have to be from a matched pair, you cant take two of the same ratio gears and use the crown from one and the pinion from another... there machined as matched sets.

Oh ya sorry about that I guess I didn't read that as thoroughly as I should have. If you are going to change gears and/or carriers you will need to have somebody do it that knows what they are doing. Setting up a 12 bolt from scratch is a black art.

When you say switiching carriers is no problem are you talking about also switching the pinnion.and all its spacers and crush sleeve. If you don't switch the pinnion do you have to reshim and check LASH, this is an issure I am dealing with right now. Thanks Ed ke6bnl

if you change the carrier you will have to set up the rear end all over again. yes you will have to check the lash and everything else. I havn't been to this point yet, so I can't answer many questions on how to set them up I'll have to look in a few books to do that. I just was saying that the carriers are interchangeable. whenever you change the carrier, ring gear or pinion you need to make all of the checks. Whenever you change one gear you should change them as a set. both new gears or a matched used set from the same rearend. I have had several people tell me that they are not hard just time consuming. I figure I just as well learn how.

Does anyone know where to get info on rebuilding one of these rear ends? My posi is going out and I do not have a clue. Chevy shop manual?

Richman Gear has made a VHS video that is very helpfull. About $10. Summit has them. Caution: rebuild requires a lot of special bearing removal tools and a hydraulic press. Also torquing crush sleeve is a real ***** with standard 1/2 drive tools.
