What Do You Guys Use Under The Carpet?

I have to repair the surface rust on the floorboard and then re-install the carpet. The underlayment, however, is trashed. I really don't want to put the original type of tar paper/foam underlay back down and I don't want to lay down the ungodly price for the Dynamat crap either. What is a good heat resistive and sound deadening underlay to put down? What have you guys used? I am going to hunt around the McMaster-Carr catalog and see what i can find too.
Thanx!

I used the pad from indoor carpet. I had just had mine replaced and had some left over. It works pretty well.

good luck

I used Grace Products Bituthene® 3000 Waterproofing Membrane. I used 2 layers. Very inexpensive. 58 dollars for 500 square feet. I used 1/2 thick foam over Bituthene® 3000 then the carpet.

My web shots folder with pictures. Look in "AC install" and the "SUBS" folder you will see pics of the bituthene convering the whole inside and back area where the tank was. I also did under the dash. Used foil backed bubble insulation on the fire wall from home depot

http://community.webshots.com/user/frazel

this is from the web

"Thought I would pass on a tip from the Volvo list. Someone posted that McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) had a sound dampening product that was the same as Dynomat for 20% of the cost of Dynomat. I ordered a couple sheets and can confirm that it is EXACTLY the same product as Dynomat, just without Dynomat logos printed on it. Cost is ~$12/sheet versus ~$80 sheet for Dynomat. On the McMaster website, search for acoustical insulation, it is the high temperature mastic on the first page"

This too with the Bituthene® 3000 referance

"OK,

Here is what I posted 3 weeks ago that apparently got lost. Scroll to the
bottom for the punch line.

A few weeks ago I mentioned a low cost source for Dynamat. Three rolls (36
sq.ft.) of Super is $120:

http://www.discountautosound.com/dynamat.htm

This is about 1/2 of list and by far the best price I've found.

Don Franck also found this site (this is their new address):

http://www.SoundDeadeningMaterial.com

That has a much lower cost ($1/sq.ft.) alternative. It is a common
waterproofing building material with characteristics (weight, thickness,
and material) very similar to Dynomat (and the other deadeners). My only
concern was with the temperature characteristics (particularly the self
stick) as it was not designed for automotive use. So I contacted them.
Their reply:

> << My only concern is that since it's not designed for cars, it may not work
> well in high temperatures. >>
>
> Safety wise, the material is good because it will not burn (even if exposed to
> open flame), but it will melt. I wouldn't recommend using this material in an
> engine bay. It works great for the entire interior of a vehicle though, under
> body panels and carpet.

As you can see, shipping to CA is a major cost. So I checked around a
little more. It appears what they are selling WR Grace's Bituthene® 3000
Waterproofing Membrane (or something very similar). I called a local
building supply and they quoted me a price of $66.39 for 18" x 75 ft (112
sq.ft. / $0.59/sq.ft.). Other (larger) sizes are available.

Very good sound deadener. The trucks' very quite inside now even with headers. You use a heat gun to stretch and shape it to conform to the floors.

You can also get a roofing product called Peel N Seal at home depot that is the same thing as dynamat from what I have read. I have ordered another product called raamat for another car and woked well. www.raamaudio.com Nice guy to deal with to.

I just put new carpet in my 69 and went down to the local carpet store and asked for some scrap padding. Cost me $8 to do the whole thing.
