Those trucks are cool. Looks like you wouldn't have any trouble feeding in the deepest of snow. That cab top is different but I like it.

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Thanks for the replies!!
Update:
I bought some new 16" steel rims ( gray for now--white later ) and put some 235-85-16 mud tires on it. It looks better to me!
I ordered a 2" EZ lift ( front and rear springs ).
I hit the LMC site and ordered carpet, sound deadener, rearview mirror, 71-72side mirrors, tach conversion, body mounts, transmission and transfer case mounts, and new sill plates. I also got a blazer tank conversion for the white 3/4 t 4x4. That will have to wait awhile!
I hope to get started on it this weekend. I have all the stuff from LMC, but no lift yet! See YA

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Didn't get much done this weekend. I tore out the old carpet and found a cool treasure ( although I have one in the folder from the PO ). The build sheet did tear in half but I saved most of it.

Any suggestions on the rust? Should I just clean it up and POR15 the floor?
I also need to take out the gas tank because the cab mount nuts are turning. I know this isn't as exciting as the other builds, but it's all I've got! I did throw in a pic of the steel rims. They will look better white and with a 2" lift!

Cool find. That's some 39 year old paper right there.

It's hard to tell by the pics really but it appears that some areas may need to be replaced with fresh metal before you por15. The front of the drivers side (where the build sheet is at) isn't looking so great, along with the sides, where the floor meets the rockers. Definitely do some clean up so you can see just how bad the rust might be. You could also poke around with a screwdriver or icepick to see if you have any thin spots.

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Thanks EC7five,
I guess what I really should have asked is--if I POR15 the floor, will it make it tougher to replace sheet metal later.
The only thin spots are where the sill plate screws go ( besides the rockers).
I would just like to slow the rust down.
On that note--what about replacing the rockers and just repainting the truck from the lower trim down? Will I regret that move? My wife would de-nut me if I get the whole thing redone!

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Well, POR15 isn't impossible to remove but it is pretty tough. Besides, it's a little expensive. I think it would be a waste to put it on if you're planning to remove it and replace any metal later. Basically POR15 would probably be overkill for your situation. I think you could get away with just cleaning up most of the rust, then hit the whole floor with some Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. Maybe some Rustoleum gloss topcoat after that or roll on some Herculiner...would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

And ouch, I certainly hope you are never de-nutted. What's a guy without his tool pouch!?

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

I did a little work last night. I removed the gas tank and started a sanding the rust on the floorboard. It was mostly surface rust, but I do have some holes in the bottom of the kick panels. I took the vents off and cleaned out a bunch of leaves!
I'm just trying to slow the rust down----I would rather wait a few years to repaint. My biggest problem was the door sill screw holes were rusted out in a few spots. I used JB Weld to fill them in---maybe that will hold the screws?

I put sound deadener on the back of the cab and in the cab corners ( the peal and stick kind from LMC ). I replaced the front and rear cab mounts---sure made a difference!!!!

I am going to start on the lift kit this afternoon and maybe put the tach kit in.

Question---I just used rustoleum primer on the floorboard--should I put a coat of paint on too. Like I said--I'm just trying to slow the rust down.

Almost forgot----I found a sticker for the 4 wheel drive diagram ( glove box ) on the passenger floorboard. It still has the paper over the sticky part. Some of the diagram stuck to the floor, but it is in decent shape. My camera batteries are dead so no pics.

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

The blue stepside is a 71 base model ( 6 banger ) that I bought about 15 years ago. I plan on putting it on a 72 4x4 frame that I have. The body is in very good shape except for a hack job on the radio hole!
My problem with it is other smaller and easier projects, plus the fact that I don't have a place to tear it down and leave it. I need the shop for other repair jobs! Someday

Here are some pics that show how the rear axle is centered in the wheel well.

First pic is before the ORD block install.

Re: JRDV Green 69 SWB $X$

Thanks Rob!

I just realized I never posted the install of the ORD block to center up the rear axle--so here goes.
I had to trim the sides of the blocks so the u-bolts would fit. The three holes allow you the set the axle further back.
I used the center hole and it centered the axle really well. The block bolts into the spring pack, so you don't have to worry about it working out under offroad conditions.

Put the 383 in the green Machine. 4x4 will be used more with snow and all. IMO you will get more use out of it.

Fivestarengines in Phoenix. I think that is their ebay name also.
I still haven't put it in the white truck yet---SOON!

I have been looking at FAST fuel injection for this project, but it is a little pricey. Simple but pricey!
