Heater wiring...

A buddy on the hamb sent me a heater for my '55.2. I've got everything together I need to install it but don't know where the wires go. There's no info in the factory shop manual or wiring diagram. This is a factory heater with four wires coming off the blower motor. Help please!

Re: Heater wiring...

Must be a deluxe heater as the standard has 1 wire.
What colours are the wires?

Re: Heater wiring...

I'm gonna go get a pic and see what colors the wires are....Stand by....

But for now, there are two circular outlets (for the defrost I presume) and then a rectangular outlet (to blow on the floor/cab). A lever operates a flap to divert the air flow to the defrost or cab.

Re: Heater wiring...

The wires are black, green, red, and yellow. The blower motor and heater core is out at the moment just to clean everything up.

Here's a pic...

Re: Heater wiring...

Doesn't look like a 2nd series.
I believe the heater core should be rectangular in shape.

Re: Heater wiring...

I looked on line and could not find anything like the motor or any info on 4 wire heater motors. Even the GM cars of the era that had multispeed motors on had one wire going to the motor (check out the old car manual project for 50's olds, buick and cadys). Maybe it has an internal reisitor setup for multi speeds? Red is usually hot, black ground and the other two could be for multi speeds with a resistor switch?. Did you get a switch with it? There are generic step switchs available on-line. Also make sure you check the voltage it is right at that age where it could be 6v or 12v. You might try posting in the electrical section and see if they can give you some direction. Stovebolt or HAMb might help too. I wonder if someone at some point adapted something else? The round heater cores were earlier than 55.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure the heater box is factory Standard Heater for '55-'57. I was able to match it up to a dealer supplied accessories catalog. It came out of a buddy's '57. The blower motor is a different matter. I think it's a replacement motor. I'm thinking each of the colored wires are for a different fan speed.

That said, I have a factory style rheostat switch. I plan on connecting the wires to power and see what they do. If the wires work like my theory, I'll connect the highest speed wire to the switch.

Here's a pic of the switch...

Also, on the heater switch I have, there are two terminals (B & M). I would assume B is for Battery or Power and M is for Motor or the Blower. Does this sound right?

This blower motor I have had two wires twisted together too. It must be that they're not needed. Please let me know what color is hooked to power and where it goes. I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Brian,

I looked in a dealer salesman accessory catalog from '56. It showed pics of the Standard and Deluxe tuck heaters along with the different heater switches. My heater box matches the Standard heater box in the catalog. Maybe you're thinking about a car heater box which is different from the trucks?

Re: Heater wiring...

I have another question. I was looking through the catlogs and they show a heater resistor. I'm assuming I need this too. How is this wired in with the heater blower and switch?
