28 vs 31 spline axles?

I finally got my ford 9 inch home and apart.I,ve found a center sec. that has a posi with 4;11 gears 31 spline, but my axles lyed ,they are a 28 spline. But I have to decide on getting new 31 axles or put gears in my old center sec.I know everyone likes the 31 splines but am I going to lose anything from just 3 splines. Will be in a 454 450 hp truck,no strip but some abuse

Re: 28 vs 31 spline axles?

Go ahead and spring for a set of new axles w/31 splines. With a big block power and 30-50 year old 28 spline axles , if you put a sticky tire on it they won't live. For $400 you can get new 31 spline axles ,bearings studs and retainer plates. If you can look at a 28 and 31 spline side by side ,you'll see a big diff.

Go 31 spline and look around for some used ones or a new set is 3-400. A set of gears will be 150 so why not get the extra insurance.

Re: 28 vs 31 spline axles?

Thanks for the input, just some added info, the rear is from 74 ish t-bird with the big drum brakes and looks like the large bearings, the axles are tapered abit at the end ,not like the severe taper on some 28,s.Just wondering why they ran some 28,s in the b.b. fords, anyway just wasn,t sure where to send my paycheck
