Hello I am back and needing help.....

OK after the loss of my wrench and soulmate our 1968 3/4ton 4x4 Suburban just sat. Two days ago I put new points and carb on my 292. It is sucking the gas in to the carb but I cannot get her to fire and run. Any advice on things I can try that won't fry my starter or the carb. We did get a nice loud backfire out of her. Please help me get my dream going.

Thanks,
Tat

Re: Hello I am back and needing help.....

I probably should have mentioned that other than a couple of gaskets a full tune up has been done and yes we have spark. Have had her running with a previous carb but the accelerator pump went in that one. So I am truly stumped. I am tired of having her towed and I hope someone has a suggestion for me. Thanks.

Re: Hello I am back and needing help.....

There are quite a few things to look at, but I will list off a few that would be the first I would start with.

1. Bring the #1 piston to TDC compression stroke
2. pop the cap off the distributor, verify that the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire terminal. (if it isn't then pop the distributor, and adjust until it does).
3. Verify that all wires are plugged to the correct spark plug and dist cap terminal. Reference this from any manual.
4. Check the gap on the points.
5. Check the gap on the spark plugs.
6. Adjust the distributor to a base line timing to get you started.
7. Make sure there are no giant vacuum leaks. (common oversight, is the brake booster connection on the intake manifold).

Those are the immediate things that come to my mind at this point. I am sure others will chime in soon enough.

Thank you. I hate that I am in this position. My wrench could do this stuff in his sleep. Me I am more of a backyard mechanic, but will learn what I need to in order to restore this Beast.
