vent window delete?

I took upon myself the task of installing new vent window weatherstripping on the driver side door of my 1987 gmc last wednesday. It didnt go too well. the rod coming off the bottom of the glass frame broke so i spent time tacking it back on and lining it back up and repainting it. I purchased the 1 piece style weatherstripping (which my truck is supposed to have) and my truck had the 2 piece style. why does my 87 have the 2 piece style anyway? its supposed to be 1 piece according to anybody i talk to.

Also, the division bar weatherstrip piece that came off had little hooks on the back of it to go in the holes of the bar and i'm told all 2 piece models were riveted and need to be redone that way. anybody else have the hook style instead? nobody sells them that i found.

I made the 1 piece fit but it still squeals and whistles like before

anyway... i'm a little discouraged and wondering if i should go through that hassle again with the correct rubber and hopefully it will stop the noise or just go with the single window conversion instead.

what do you guys think? success stories?

If you had trouble with the install of the gasket for the factory glass, don't expect the one peice glass to be any easier. In the beginning they had major issues with fitment and from what I here it has been revised and a little easier and better functionally, but I can't offer any personal experience with the kits.

Mine had a 1 piece style on one side and 2 piece style on the other. As far as I can tell it came that way.

These trucks whistled and leaked when new. If you want it really quiet you should probably take a look at the one piece side glass. Even that might not do it, since wind noise was also a function of door fit, A pillar gap, etc.

Re: vent window delete?

I installed brand new GM vent window assemblies into my '85 Suburban and it's better than new. While I was at it, I installed new window weatherstripping aswell. No leaks at all, nice and quiet. Maybe that's an option for you. I found that replacing the entire vent window was easier than trying to replace just the window seals.

Re: vent window delete?

i changed the front glass and vents/seals from my 89 burb to the 78 jimmy, the glass was way thinner but vent closes right and the 89 has locks on the vents

note the pass side of the 88 Texas burb has always been(still is)sealed closed, had to cut the drivers to open it,back doors had no motors/marks to show they ever did

who did you buy yours from? I'm definitely going to buy new assemblies. After thinking about the one piece glass conversion i decided i want to keep the factory look instead of modifying my doors. I just hope they last me years before i have to fool with them again.

Re: vent window delete?

I have 2 87 models one gmc and one chevy both have the two piece seals.. like you I have ordered and received the 1 pc style. Bad thing is the seal that were there were fine just a little weathered in the chevy but since the truck is getting painted I removed all the old seals and now wondering what to do with the vent glasses.. wonder if gm still makes the orginal 2pc seals. the rear piece hooks in just as your were saying.

I bought one from LMC, and it was in GM wrapping/packaging. It was kind of salty though, like over $200. My hinges were rusted off though, and I had to have it. Two months later I bought some used ones at a swap meet for $5 each.

I work in parts at a Chevy dealer so I got them through my work but I think that all the companies that sell them sell GM parts assemblies.
