Engine Replacement(s)
Curious about yall's opinions on this motor. Seems 283s...although not alot of low end torque....have always made great little cruisin' engines. What yall think about this one?
This is the 'for sale' ad and picture of the unit as I found it on the web. ****** 1962 chevy 283 motor For sale, 1962 chevy 283 motor,long tail standard trans,starter,carb,bell housing, hydralic clutch. Pulled all in one unit from 62 chevy truck. Ran good before pulling, been sitting. Picture of engine and transmission ****** Thanks and as usual...all comments or advice is greatly appreciated!!! How long has it "been sitting"?
The fact that it is outside makes me think it'll need a rebuild, even if it was covered. (onless they capped off all openings) The tranny probably isn't worth too much, I'd give maybe 150 bucks. But I'm cheap. Anyone else think that is a bit over priced? |

I wouldn't pay 250 unless you can open it up and take a peek. Actually....Unless you have your heart set on a 283, you should be able to find an equivalent deal on a bigger motor.

I agree, $250 is a bit steep. You should be able to find a good 350 for that price. A 283 is a good little motor, although it lacks in cubes a bit. I would try to get the seller to start it up for you.
Also, some older 283's had a rope rear main seal. I'm not sure when they switched, but i have heard they are leak prone compared to a rubber one.

This was an engine we found thru local classifieds. Since then....Ive had another person contact me with a 283 block...crank and heads.....$250 OBO....and another with a running 327....$350 OBO....
Im in no hurry.... YET...lol Thanks for the responses guys Billy G

283, a great little engine......I have 1 64 virgin packed in grease, with 2 standard /standard forged cranks, 2 sets of rods, & a set of sj 327 rods(a little beefier than the 283 rods). If the funds get right, it WILL be running in front of the 6 spd Richmond in my longhorn........but the blower is the biggest cost! As heavy as these old trucks are, you really need more cubes to get them rolling..... a little eng, with a big blower & a lot of gears would work tho......

$250 is a bit steep to me too. they are great engines, but i don't think that in these trucks they would do very well. you need torque to get them going. if you're looking for something to rebuild, i've got a 307 that i'll sell for $150 OBO. it ran when it was pulled, but has been sitting for a while (about 11 months or so). it doesn't have any bracketry, but has the stock 3 speed tranny attached that would go with it.
