350 wont start

My truck wouldn't start the other day. I traced the problem to no spark, and a bad dizzy. I had another distributer laying around so I swapped that in. Noe I have spark, but it's still not starting. When I tried to start it it would just crank and make no attempt to fire. The carb was in need of a rebuild anyway, so I took it apart, cleaned it up, and put a rebuild kit in it. Got it back on, and now the same results but every few seconds it'll blow fuel out of the carb. I'm kinda stumped as to what it could be, maybe the timing could be off? But you'd think there'd be some kinda backfiring going on if that was the only problem. Thanks yall.

you can try getting the #1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke then point the tip of the rotor at #1. this should get you close.

if you have a points distributor besides being in time those points need to have the gap properly set

It's HEI.

panda68, That's how I put it in. Unless maybe I got it backwards, TDC exhaust stroke instead of compression stroke. But I feel pretty confident I've got it right.

Re: 350 wont start

if you have fuel coming out of top of carb, maybe your float isnt adjusted correctly or it is saturaded, (too heavy to maintain proper needle to seat) and or you have debri in between needle and seat, have you looked at plugs to determine if they are wet with fuel, if so clean or replace em. if you have weak spark at plugs, maybe a coil is weak and or rotor to cap problem, how is compression? do you have spark on all cylinders or are you just checking one?

Re: 350 wont start

Sure sounds like you are 180* off. That would cause the popping thru carb.

Re: 350 wont start

I only checked one plug. I did adjust the float but it's possible it's off, I'm new at this. I'll check my plugs. How would I check for a weak coil?

Re: 350 wont start

Got her running! Thanks for the help!

put the old dizzy back in (turns out it wasn't bad) changed the plugs, and after messing with the timing for awhile finally got her going, starts right up and idles well, I think the carb rebuild helped alot, although it is leaking gas between the baseplate, the main casting, and the air horn, so I guess I need to take it apart and tighten in up so more.
