2003 GMC 2500 4wd HD Issues

Any one have any of these issues?
1. Transfer case chain rub hole in case and makes noise
2. Ignition module come out and get out of sync
3. 4wd doesn't seem to engage
4. Speedo sticks and pegs when going less than speed limits
5. Cruise control doesn't seem to work now, could it be from the above problem

If anyone has had any of these problems let me know what you did to correct.
Thanks

#3. If it is the push button 4wd, the switch is a common issue
#4. Yours falls into the age range for the inst cluster service bulliten. Some of the needles go crazy or just quit working all together. GM did a extended warr on these. Check with you local dealer to see if yours falls into it.

Re: 2003 GMC 2500 4wd HD Issues

Thanks bwood, I bought the truck used so don't think a warranty would apply.
I here there is a solenoid or actuator or what ever its called down under the front that fails as the push buttons sound like they are sending a signal.

It doesn't matter if you are not the original owner of the truck for the warranty on the cluster. There is a time frame, and mileage window that you have to be under. I don't remember now what it is. I've had mine fixed twice now!

Would that be considered warranty or recall? How do I find out, call a dealer?

It's kind of both, but yeah like truckdude said just call your local dealer and talk to them.

Re: 2003 GMC 2500 4wd HD Issues

They range in price depending on who repairs it. The first one I had done I went through the dealership, and it cost me about $350. The last time I had it done I found a local guy that did it for about half that. Call around at some of the truck salvage places, or some of the local garages. They may know someone local that can repair the motors for ya.

Any parts store that handles Dorman Products can get new after market ones also. Don't have a clue on $$$$$$.

Re: 2003 GMC 2500 4wd HD Issues

I bought this truck used and it looks beautiful and drives great and through time it has developed these issues I have read about, I paid a lot of money for this truck, 1st the transfer case got the hole warn in it from the pump coming loose at least I think that is what did it and the 4wd dosen't work, not sure if it is the push buttons or solenoid and now the speedo issue, none of these are resolved and I am still driving it. Thinking of buying a older Ford F250 is that wrong?

1. Look for a new t-case. By the time you correct the internal problems with the anti rattle clip that has rubbed a hole, and replace the half case. You can replace it for about the same.

2. Not sure what you mean by gets out of sync. please explain?

3. as for 4wd, its either bad actuator, t-case internal failure, needs updated programing, or needs a switch

4. as for the speedo, you stepper motor is bad, you can buy these motors for about 5 bux. and fix the cluster yourself. Just take it apart, unsolder the motors and resolder new motor. check youtube for instructions. or there are plenty of services that will repair it for you for 75-150.

5. Cruise is probably your brake switch... but who knows.

Spudz Re
2. Not sure what you mean by gets out of sync. please explain?
My wife drove my truck one day and called me from her destination and said that the key just spins so I thought I would do a google search before a went to look at the trucks problem, I found some info stating that there is a module that clicks in the botton of the key switch, once I removed the plastic housing from the steering column I found this module and it seemed it was not clicked in and maybe it popped out allowing the key cylinder to spin, it may have came loose because of the tilt wheel getting slammed by accident from time to time. So this info I found said the module had to be synced (Indexed) up with the tumbler and after clicking the module in I saw what they meant as the ignition wouldn't work correctly and if you got it close enough to work it could still be one click off where you could get a power source drain, in my case it was the trans selector light and it stayed on after I turned the key off, so I pulled the module back out and turned the key slightly to index the module till I found the right place and for now seems to be working correct. Sorry for the long explanation.
Jim

I patched the hole and it has oil but still makes a rattle sound. So at this time could it be fixed or should I replace and If I replace whats going to keep it from doing it again?

I have had limited success with jb weld. it is prolonging the inevitable...
what has happened is the anti rattle clip has broken, and rubbed a hole in the case. the best thing to do it find a used half case. BUT if you want to prevent/correct the problem.... go here. this will explain what has happened.

Re: 2003 GMC 2500 4wd HD Issues

I had to go outside and check my t case. It was dry on the tail. I have an 03 Z71 with 75,000 miles.

Is there a warning sign I can look for prior to the pump housing wearing thru the t case housing? Maybe some of the loud rattling 2nova2 is talking about? Or is it fairly silent until it wears thru?
