Valve machine work question???

So Im taking the plunge and am going to try and rebuild my entire engine. The only original part I plan on using (internally) is the crankshaft ( If its good shape) Its a 250 that had a stuck lifter ( I suspect). 1970 block and unsure about the head, but not integrated with the manifold.
.

My first step was to have the head work done. Im planning on taking everything apart and have the machine shop. Tank, resurface (if needed), magnaflux and do a valve job. Then I plan on installing a lump port kit myself.

Well my questions are these.

Do I need to furnish the new valves to the shop with the head when I bring it in?

What else should I be looking for and asking for?

And ballpark cost?

Any and all input is appreciated upfront. Thanks guys.

Re: Valve machine work question???

Never have worked on a 250, but worked A LOT on the older 235, which is a pushrod engine. Not knowing the 250, I must assume that it has hydraulic lifters because you feel that one is "stuck". If it is a stuck hydraulic lifter, there are cures for that short of a rebuild.

Some thoughts. I would be the last guy to advise you not to completely rebuild the engine, especially if you want the experience of doing it or feel you need the dependability/satisfaction of having a near-new hummer when you turn the key. But, if the block is good and the cylinders not badly worn - and the crank is not badly worn/out of shape - you can do a lot of good with that engine at a lot less than full "replace them all" cost. For example, if valves are leaking a bit, they can be re-surfaced to an extent, maybe new seats, maybe knurl the guides if needed. Just some possibilities.

How is the oil pressure at idle when engine is heated? What is the compression of each cylinder cold, and hot? These readings and a bit more looking will give you some good clues about how much you probably need to do, and spend, if you are watching the $$.

Hope this helps.

Re: Valve machine work question???

Thanks. I do want the experience of doing it myself and getting exactly what I want in the engine, Im not made of money. But the engine is just sitting there. I have time (now and then) to work on it. I have the inline 6 power manual and have great ideas from that. I bought the Boxwrench engine rebuilding DVD. Also the Speedway motors DVD. So Ive watched and watched....and read and read. Im ready to get my hands dirty now.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced solid lifter cam for our 250's?

Mine is hydraulic now. If the cam price isnt radically different it might be worth a shot.
